No stars for whoever wrote the headline over the blurb - the crass use of cliched adjectives drops a huge hint as to how the story will play out. Still, I ended up liking it, despite having to put it down frequently to take a breather from the bleak situation portrayed here. I always think that relationships between architects and artists can be dangerous – they can go badly wrong. First, they didn’t use full blades, but instead very cleverly suspended the ends of the blades in cut glass on a wire frame. If you’ve spent a significant chunk of your life learning about your subject, you will be have the authority to explain it to other people, or comment on trends in your industry.Their memories of James were heartwarming to read about, and it felt like a satisfying read which I devoured in two sittings.

I wanted to know more about what happened to certain characters like Stephi but it kind of just ended.James is a good man; kind, intelligent and curious, but a series of events have sent him spiralling. The bench seats at 10/4 Pentonville Road are a good example of his studio’s work, they sit snugly within the recessed Petersen brick walls and provide a contrasting softness and texture to the reception. I just found it a little unbelievable and shocking but not in a good way the fact that the lady from the train talked him down and then killed herself? We met them a long time ago when we were doing two restaurants in Bournemouth (they have a factory in Poole) and have worked with them ever since on many restaurants and hotels such as the public areas at Chiltern Firehouse, Decimo at The Standard London and lots of the Busaba restaurants.

Ending with an unexpected sting in the tail, there was at least one other character I’d have liked to get to know better but that much is still left unresolved is an apt way to conclude this honest journey through one man’s darkest hours. By and large I found it a touching and hopeful read, although obviously the subject matter is very sad. He’s one of life’s triers, but his romantic relationship and his career have both fallen apart, and a family relationship has gone wrong as well. Just to say at the outset that this novel deals with the subject of suicide, a sensitive subject for some no doubt.And he doesn't let any of the supporting cast off the hook, making them all face their culpability in the situation as they realise it may be too late to offer James the support he's clearly been needing - if they can even find him. All that remains to be done is to send a last message to all his 158 contacts in his phone informing them of his intentions to take his own life. But I did think Watson's narration of the audiobook was really enjoyable and I'm keen to pick up something else by him. When you put something in their hands, even when there are difficulties to overcome, you know you’re going to get what you want.
