About this deal

Using grease as a water repellant is common especially in sealed areas such as bottom brackets and wheels.

My question is, what are repercussions of a bone-dry bearing with absolutely no lubrication – besides oxidation and ingress of debris? A lot of the time Shimano don't bother recommending a specific grease, but when they do, this one tends to be the one. Although not recommended for press-fit or threaded applications, assembly compound is very useful on clamping applications, especially involving carbon fiber.

Thanks for your quick reply; for the bearing in the freehub I’ll try the NLGI 1 as you suggested and see how it goes. For assembling components, the requirements of the grease are very different, they are in a “use once” and then forget application to aid assembly and disassembly. The table below is not comprehensive and should not be used as a sole resource for surface prep selection — carefully read the article above, use your own judgement, and if you’re still unsure, ask your local bike mechanic.I've been using the Dura Ace grease for wheel bearings but recently I've switched to Finish Line extreme flouro.

Assembly compound such as Park Tool SAC-2 is often a more appropriate surface prep option for these components — see below. Some of our partners may process your data as a part of their legitimate business interest without asking for consent.

Although it may be convenient, and it may work temporarily in a pinch, common household penetrating oil such as WD-40 is not an ideal chain lubricant. It's possible that the freehub has worn out, but if not, you definitely don't want grease in there as it gums up the mechanism. I had a look at some of the brands that you recommend, they all have a huge selection can you give some hints on what is important for the bike?

Dura-Ace Grease Equivalent? : r/bikewrench - Reddit Dura-Ace Grease Equivalent? : r/bikewrench - Reddit

I’ve read and heard things before about greases and lubricants, particularly with regards to using a thinner grease or even oil to reduce friction, as you touched on as well. However, grease is not ideal for threading dissimilar metals together, especially when titanium components or frames are involved. Grease should be changed when it becomes contaminated with grit and dirt or when the oil in the grease becomes old and dry, which reduces its lubricating properties. Excluding the different specific functions where you need oil, rather than grease, then you don't necessarily 'need' any more than one grease. One important application for grease is bearing systems, such as those found on hubs, headsets, pedals and bottom brackets. My freehub is absolutely packed with finish line white grease, but the springs in a Hope free hub are so powerful that it still works perfectly (and makes a racket that lets everyone else know where I am). When applied before the use of threadlocker or retaining compound, primer will prepare both surfaces and accelerate curing of the compound. Using 'premium grease' on freehub pawls is a bad idea because it's too thick and can inhibit pawl engagement. There can be difference in fit when you are wearing a pair of jeans than when you are in cycling shorts.
