Since the death of his son Jeffrey Dahmer, Lionel has been involved in several TV shows and documentaries, including Biography, Dahmer on Dahmer: A serial killer speaks and even Netflix’s latest show Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. He received his primary education and secondary education at local Wisconsin schools and enjoyed a relatively good childhood. The father and son bonded over an odd activity: bleaching animal bones from rodents they found dead under their house. His character features in the first episode of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and it turns out Lionel is still alive today.

In A Father's Story, Dahmer relates that, from the very beginning, their marriage struggled due to Joyce's poor mental health and irascible and tempestuous behavior and his own inability to fully keep up with it. He also blames himself for Jeffrey’s flaws saying he was negligent and probably didn’t give enough to Jeffrey emotionally. Lionel Herbert Dahmer was born in West Allis, Wisconsin, on July 29, 1936, to Herbert Walter Dahmer, a high-school math teacher and barber, whom Dahmer described as "a good father, as caring and concerned as any child would wish", [2] and Catherine Jemima Hughes, a housewife.

As of 2023, Dahmer lives alone in Ohio, after his second wife, Shari, died in January 2023 at the age of 81.But in 1991, his murder spree came to an abrupt end when a would-be victim, Tracy Edwards, managed to escape and notify the police.

Then again, Joyce Dahmer had had a difficult pregnancy and had been prescribed different medications while pregnant with Jeffrey. After Jeffrey was arrested in 1989 for second-degree sexual assault, Lionel wrote the judge in the case and begged him to intervene. He stood by his son’s side during his trial, during which Jeffrey was sentenced to 15 life sentences, and continued to visit Jeffrey while he was behind bars.
