About this deal

In 1895 she moved back to Germany with her sister to study humanities and classics at the university of Munich (the then centre of classical studies). I know this is an unfair comparison, but earlier in the month I had been reading Oscar Wilde's stories for children, as well as some of Kipling's poetry, and I kept waiting for Hamilton to dazzle me, even just a little bit. Perhaps this explains why Fry has kept away from the legends of quest, war, politics and kin-murder that are the stuff of the major mythical cycles.

I like how Edith Hamilton represents the gods, she’s clearly not a fan of most of them, also her explanation of the Eleusinian Mysteries is the clearest I have come across so far. Greek civilization flowered first, generating the paradigms, frameworks, and myths that the Romans later adopted. They lived together in Gramercy Park, Manhattan and Sea Wall, Maine, during which time they raised and home-schooled Reid's nephew, Francis Dorian Fielding Reid (1917–2008). What's more (displaying my ignorance here) I was confused over the title of the play, and some of the main protagonists of the play, the Furies. Disappointment awaits readers expecting the myth cycles centring on Troy and Odysseus, Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, Jason, Medea and the Argonauts, Heracles’ labours, Theseus and the Minotaur, Perseus and Andromeda or the Theban royal house of Oedipus and Antigone.Hamilton's other notable works include The Roman Way (1932), The Prophets of Israel (1936), Mythology (1942), and The Echo of Greece (1957).

Alice Hamilton became a resident of Chicago's Hull House, a settlement house that offered food, shelter, and educational classes as a charitable effort on the part of wealthy donors and scholars who volunteered their time. This story, along with a few others, got me wondering why no one has created any horror adaptations of the Greek Myths. I picked up some info somewhere in the edition I'm reading, and finally realized that in the climactic section of the play the Furies are rebranded by Athena into the Eumenides - a name that means Kindly Ones - thus changing them from a group seeking revenge and retribution (the old way that humans responded to murder) to a group which provides a higher moral choice to human kind, through the institution of justice.Their depictions of heroism have provided models for social morals and ethics that still resonate today. The most beautiful woman who has ever lived, Helen is promised to Paris after his judgment of Aphrodite.
