The Amazfit Verge runs a proprietary OS, despite its capable hardware – dual core processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB storage (1.9GB user available).The screen is a circular 1.3-inch 360x360 AMOLED panel, slightly recessed within an IP68 water and dust resistant casing. The watch’s two-tone finish looks fun, pairing dark and light grey off against one another in the version we reviewed, with the rubber strap taking on the darker tone, keeping things classy.

This isn’t helped by the rubbery wristband they come with, although you can snap these off via the release pins and replace with something more to your taste. Beware, though, a different strap might look a bit odd due to the way the bezel moulds into the top of the bands. There's 4GB of storage onboard for you to upload music for listening to on your runs, while the display is a 1.39-inch 454 x 454 AMOLED that will show all of your stats in an easy to read way. Not too much difference there, which is a good sign. I’m inclined to trust the Garmin Forerunner 245 of these, because it almost always comes within 0.05km of 5km at parkrun, although it’s possible it was overestimating. That would put both Amazfits slightly off the pace, but not catastrophically so. Setting up the watch is also different, depending on which model you get. While the Verge uses the Amazfit app, the Verge Lite requires you to install Xiaomi’s Mi Fit app – the same one users of the Xiaomi Mi Band have to use. That isn’t a problem given the company clearly doesn’t expect you to own both watches but it’s an oddity all the same.
