With her trademark wit and natural flair for a story, Sarah Turner has proved to her thousands of followers (and herself) that she absolutely belongs in the commercial fiction world. I cannot wait to see her novel-writing career unfold. Stepping Up made me laugh and cry and cringe at various points. Beth started off as a character difficult to sympathise with but as the story progressed Turner was able to make the reader really warm to her. The characters are brilliantly drawn and I could picture myself at their dinner table and rolling my eyes along with Beth at her mum's interfering comments and finding comfort in her dad's words of wisdom and solid support. After graduating with first-class honours in Philosophy from The University of Exeter, she dabbled in careers in finance then higher education before a ‘warts and all’ parenting blog she’d started to let off steam gathered unexpected momentum and writing became her full-time job. She has to contend with a teenage niece, Polly, who is hormonal, emotional and has so much she is holding in, away from everyone else. The way their connection develops and goes from breaking point to a true sense of connection is wonderful.

As the mother of two daughters, this is stomach wrenching. Franz spoke about the work that Yuwa has done to address these issues - first building a girl's football team that has traveled the world, representing India in international tournaments, and then building a school that is nurturing the girls' rights to learn and helping them to develop the confidence and resilience needed to become authors of their own fate and leaders within their communities.

The storyline. It was just so well written. The book covers some heavy themes but it was done really well & just felt so heartbreakingly real 💔 Beth is now guardian to her teenage niece and toddler nephew, catapulted into an unfamiliar world of bedtime stories, parents' evenings and cuddly elephants. Having never been responsible for anyone - or anything - it's not long before she feels seriously out of her depth.

Stepping Up by Sarah Turner | Goodreads

Unfortunately, it just reads like one cliché after another and I had a difficult time connecting with it. A heartwarming story about overcoming the odds and finding strength you never knew you had. An incredible debut novel, warm, uplifting and full of so much love - you won't be able to put this down. Once you step up, somehow that act of taking initiative drives you to find the resources you need inside and outside yourself." pg 119 This is a heartwarming, humbling and often hard hitting book, that had me tear up on many occasions but also laugh at many moments too.Providing for your family is more than meeting physical needs. It also means taking responsibility to provide for emotional and spiritual needs. The writing style of "Stepping Up" is engaging and thought-provoking, and Izzo's use of anecdotes and case studies makes the book both relatable and inspiring. In addition, the book is well-researched and draws on various sources to support the author's arguments. It provides a balanced perspective on the challenges and benefits of personal responsibility. Turner has a firmly established fanbase from her blog The Unmumsy Mum, which documents the highs and lows of motherhood in an approachable way. Who am I to step up? There are no extraordinary people, only ordinary people who do extraordinary things – Mother Teresa.

Stepping Up - Penguin Books UK

STEPPING UP is a heart-blasting triumph of a novel - wise, witty and wonderfully human.' Isabelle Broom A decent self help book that would have been better with a more engaging narrator (I listened to the audiobook). It had some jewels of wisdom and the over all message of "step up and so something you won't regret it is a good one". Stepping Up is a story about Beth, now Beth hasn't really got her act together. She's a 30 year old singleton, still living with her parents. Flitting from one job to the next. Nobody really has high expectations of her. But one day something happens and she has to step up to the challenge and become an adult. A real man rejects passivity, accepts responsibility, leads courageously, and expects God's greater reward"

The royalties from this book are being donated to Yuwa, an NGO which works to give girls in rural India a better future through football and education.

She's quit more jobs and relationships than she can remember and she still sleeps in her childhood bedroom. It's not that she hasn't tried to grow up, it's just that so far, the only commitment she's held down is Friday drinks at the village pub. She's quit more jobs and relationships than she can remember, and she still sleeps in her childhood bedroom. It's not that she hasn't tried to grow up, it's just that so far, the only commitment she's held down is Friday drinks at the village pub. A moving and beautifully-told tale of parenthood but not as you know it. I just loved it.' Gillian McAllister You know people who accept responsibility — aren't they great to be around?" vii, from the forward.

Stepping Up review: This thought-provoking debut will make

Written with such love and heart. Sarah has done an exceptional job of marrying her trademark comedy with deep and raw emotion. I loved it!' GIOVANNA FLETCHER while the teenage years are seeded with temptations and vulnerabilities, they can be a time when courage is forged." I am only one person. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has – Margaret Mead, noted anthropologist. This book needs all the stars! It made me laugh, it made me cry and I just want to start it all over again.'Beth is the perfect protagonist – strong, lovable, frustrating and perfectly flawed. As a reader, it’s clear she needs to go through a rite of passage – and you soon experience her pain along this journey. I felt deeply for Beth dealing with her family tragedy and during the daily mishaps, which often followed with sarcastic mutterings from her mother or Beth’s inner critic. Here I should mention the flipside to these moments – like many parenting stories; there were moments of hilarity, such as the sharply observed description of a modern children’s party. Sort of a life's work for Rainey, discussing the roles and transitions and struggles of manhood from childhood through adolescence, adulthood, mentorship, and the patriarch. An unspeakable tragedy turns Beth’s life upside down, and she finds herself guardian to her teenage niece and toddler nephew, catapulted into an unfamiliar world of bedtime stories, parents’ evenings and cuddly elephants. Having never been responsible for anyone – or anything – it’s not long before she feels seriously out of her depth.
