I’m telling you, the accidents are the best part of Men at Work, rivaled only by the moment leading up to an accident, where everyone around the table anticipates watching the active player fail miserably at their seemingly impossible task. On the top of the draw pile is either a picture of a builder’s hat with coloured gloves or a picture of coloured girders. This tells you what to place. The colour of the gloves explains what colour girder to place your meeple builder on. The colour girder describes which colour girder you will be placing. My only real issue with Men at Work is the player elimination mechanic. For the 2-player game, player elimination is not an issue but at the 3-5-player count, having someone sit out seems like a mistake to me. This does tend to speed up the game, but I’ve never been a fan having players sit out. Games are a communal experience for my group and player elimination goes against that. Final Thoughts:

If you've not played a dexterity game, they are infuriatingly joyous and have you twitching with excitement and trepidation. In Men at Work instruction cards are double sided. When drawn, players will turn them over to reveal instructions they must complete. The top of the draw pile will dictate which instruction you have to follow. Each card will have you placing a girder or a worker. It sounds easy but believe me it’s not. The traditional way to win is if a player collects the required number of worker of the month awards. Foreman – In this version players start the game with 2 random instruction cards. Over the course of the game, they can use one of these cards if they do not want to carry out an instruction shown on a drawn card. This version also states players have to place workers on the highest girder of the chosen colour. In contrast to this, Men at Work spreads out on the tabletop like a bottle of jam. Allowing for more creativity in where you place your items. Especially when combined with the challenges you’re provided with each turn. You’ll always have multiple choices on where to place your piece, making it a compelling decision without being overly complicated.

My group and I were big fans of the variant rules which really help enhance the base rules but also add to the replay value. If you like to keep a small, finely curated collection of games, then Men at Work might fit that perfect niche of a dexterity game like it did for me. If you already have a dexterity game you really like and you don’t play it that often, Men at Work might not have enough there to completely change your stance on the genre. If you can get a group of 3-5 players together regularly enough, it’s probably worth it. If you do most of your gaming with 2 players, there might not be enough here for you. Personally, I just have too many other 2-player games I’d recommend before Men at Work. If a player loses all their safety certificates they are out of the game. As often they’re able to stretch out each strike, decreasing the chance they’ll be eliminated before the shaky-hand players. The youngest player is given the safety hook starting piece and draws the first card. Time to Build The next player then has to use the safety hook to remove all the fallen pieces. Once they have done this they can continue with their turn. However, if the player causes an accident during a clean-up operation, they also lose a certificate and forfeit their turn.
