There are a lot of 'secrets' to this quest posted here, but none of them seem to work with any kind of repeatability. So I decided to ignore all of them, and I looked at this one from a WoW pet mechanics angle.

The single strongest indicator of whether credit was given was staying close to your abom. Sure, it stays under your control, but once it's past some range (I dunno, maybe the range of the Scepter), it seems to quit being properly associated to you for quest credit purposes. I tried being far away, not having the abom hitting them, etc. As long as I didn't hit the boom button more than once, I got credit every single time.
