We’re here because Marvel in 2022 will be releasing Doctor Doom: The Book Of Doom Omnibus, a suitably massive collection of the Latverian overlord’s greatest battles with the greatest heroes of the Marvel Universe. Collects Darth Vader (2015) #1-25, Darth Vader Annual (2015) #1, Star Wars: Vader Down (2015) #1, and Star Wars (2015) #13-14. Overall, the smattering of stories shows the breadth and complexity of Doom. From his early appearances in the Fantastic Four and Amazing Spider-Man by Lee, Kirby and Ditko he's, in general, a super-intelligent one-sided villain, but I think his visual appearance makes him intriguing. One of the reasons Doom's dynamic with the Fantastic Four is so interesting is the solo vs. family aspect that makes for an involving tension; they always have someone to count on, while he is frequently alone. Of course, Kristoff can't fully comprehend everything he's being told, and Doom's rage explodes after one such perceived insult. The cold, reflective metal of his mask is juxtaposed against the fear on the young boy's face, the emotion enhanced by Glynis Wein's hot colors. As much as Doom sees potential in his ward, as a future ruler and an opportunity for found family, Kristoff can't match him in terms of wanting to destroy the Fantastic Four.Bow before the majesty of Doctor Doom!
