About this deal

This works really well, and it’s a big step up compared to traditional radiator valves that are always open. The only things I lose with TRVs (compared to smart valves) are: Furthermore, Tado knows when you’ve opened a window from the fast drop in temperature. It can use this information to turn down the radiators in that room to prevent wasted enegry. You won't get the full benefits without a smart thermostat Otherwise the valves cannot communicate with your boiler to turn it on and off, so your radiators will only heat up if the heating is already turned on. Neither of the boiler manufacturer's smart TRVs are compatible with home automation devices such as Alexa, IFTTT and Google Home.

It doesn’t have many of the ‘smart’ features that you’d expect from a smart thermostat like motion sensor control and geolocation. It doesn’t adapt or learn based on your routines, and isn’t capable of working with HomeKit or Google Assistant without an IFTTT workaround. Those that won't use the smart features If you're likely to forget to use the app, or unlikely use the extra features to change how you currently heat their home, the amount you'll save on heating will be less

Benefit From a Smart Thermostat

For most people, yes. Smart radiator valves offer greater control and convenience, plus they can help you save money by reducing the amount of energy you use to heat your home. The Honeywell Lyric T6R is a simple thermostat, but we like the fact it isn't overcomplicated. It's functional, but in a good way. Initially the T6R struggled to connect to our smartphone and home WiFi, but after a couple of attempts we were up and running. Is this a case where the system has to be secured so that it stays fully charged with water at a reliable pressure or no TRV (smart or otherwise) could possibly stay working? Or could a smart valve open up the radiator more than a mechanical TRV at those middle of the night times when “3” doesn’t produce the temperature it’s supposed to?

The dimension across the diameter of the thread should measure 30mm and the ‘thread pitch’ should measure 1.5mm (thread pitch is the measurement of one thread to the next). The pin height when measured from the top of the valve thread should measure approximately 14mm and the radiator valve must fully close when the pin is pressed no more than 4mm (most thermostatic radiator valves will close with only 2mm of pin movement). The Nest Learning Thermostat is among the best-known smart thermostats around, and for good reason. This product has shown how powerful smart heating can be. Now in its third generation, it remains one of the best smart thermostats you can buy.

Hydronic balancing

As well as looking very sleek and blending in with your radiator, they are really functional too. Two heating modes, comfort and economy, work to maintain the heat on a room-by-room basis. Comfort mode directs the radiator valves to heat up the rooms whilst economy tells it to limit the temperature. The system is suitable for both collective/district heating systems as well as traditional boilers. With traditional boilers, the thermostat controls your overall boiler, whilst the radiator valves allow zoning of the rooms. And figuring out the temperatures that different rooms needed to be at to feel comfortable was something of an issue for the first few days. It’s definitely a more labor-intensive process to figure out the heating requirements of each room and the schedules, and we didn’t get it right for the first few days, leading to some cold evenings and hot nights. Nest has pre-programmed the Thermostat E with a schedule based on real data from existing Nest users. As you use the thermostat, it learns and updates your schedule. Their Evohome smart TRV’s are used on individual radiators to allow zoning. Note that you will also need the Honeywell thermostat and boiler relay which doesn’t currently come bundled with this kit.

You set the temperature in degrees celsius This is easier to use and more intuitive than the 0-5 scale on TRVs. While it is possible to just put your entire home at the same level constantly, that would be like doing the school run in a Porsche. You get Evohome to get unprecedented control – just be prepared to spend some time and effort exercising that control. You can easily set up heating schedules. For example, the heating can be turned off in all the rooms but the office during the day, and then be turned on low in the bedrooms and higher in the living room during the evening.

Wireless Doorbells

It took one engineer around half an hour to connect the boiler control unit to our current central heating controls, however this could vary depending on your home's setup. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmH4f0Gnzyk Video can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Hive Radiator Valve | Hive UK (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmH4f0Gnzyk) When manually overridden you can select how long the Lyric T6R should follow the new command before returning to your schedule, which is a useful feature if you’re looking for a few hours of heat before leaving the house or going to sleep. You can set the temperature of each room using the thermostatic radiator valves. However, as seen on the diagram, the valves can't communicate with the smart thermostat or your smartphone, so you will have to change them manually. While you have a reasonable amount of freedom when it comes to the placement of the T6R, you need to make sure it's in a room that is representative of your home's average temperature; there's no point placing it in a conservatory or a room that's generally poorly heated, as you'll end up wasting power and money. Design and display

But like all technology, it ultimately comes down to what you need from your heating controls and how you plan to use it. If you're unlikely to use smart valves to reduce how often your heating is on you're unlikely to save money in the long run. Cold weather boost

If you’re looking for the most powerful and flexible heating system, then the Genius Hub should be top of your list. Designed and built by a UK company, this is a seriously impressive heating system that can control practically all types of heat source, from combi boilers to electric. As you’d expect from such a system, control over individual rooms comes courtesy of smart radiator valves. Honeywell HR92UK Radiator Controller - Compatibility Guide Our TRV Compatability Guide for Evohome Controls Many homeowners already have thermostatic radiator valves (TRV's) fitted and rather than go to the inconvenience and expense of changing each thermostatic valve body (not to mention the required draining of the heating system), Honeywell have made their HR92UK Radiator Controllers compatable with most existing TRV's which also use the standard M30 x 1.5mm threaded body.
