About this deal

I haven't noticed a big price hike in Nikon flashes compared to their past history, though when features are added such as active cooling in the SB-5000, greater zoom range, and radio control, it is understandable that the price does increase somewhat. A comparison to Yongnuo or Godox can be made of course, they are cheaper but to my knowledge there are no repair facilities across the world. I need a financially healthy Nikon over the course of a longer period of time and buying Nikon accessories helps with that, so I do that rather than complain when they go bankrupt and suddenly I have no support or repair parts for the Nikon gear that I use. I wouldn't buy a product that won't work for me. I also avoid the most expensive products for obvious reasons. But in the middle I think both the chain of infrastructure to manufacture and support the product and the value are at a reasonable balance. Your mileage may vary. The Godox V1 TTL Li-ion flash has a round head to provide soft and even illumination, like studio units. The wide-angle adjustment from 0°to 330° horizontally and -7 to 120° vertically, improving the shooting efficiency in bounce flash. V1 also supports software updates via USB. I've employed the flash regularly for product photography and other sundries in the seven months I've been using it, and have only had to dig around to find the small charging cradle three or four times.

The V1 uses a new battery, the VB26. This is a 7.2volt 2600mAh battery. This is compared to the v860ii VB18 battery which has a capacity of 2000mAhThere's no difference in power. I've measured both using my trusty Sekonic light meter and the results are the same. In master mode, individual groups can be turned on/off by pressing the group button repeatedly rather than having to press multiple buttons in previous flashes.

They should have come out with a wireless version of the SU-800 controller long ago. As it is, the SB5000 really isn't useful on older Nikon bodies. I looked up local prices. SB-5000 is 479€, Canon's 600EX-II RT is 569€, and the Profoto A1X is 1090€. So, it depends on what you compare with. Material: the wheel and the buttons on my flash were particularly flimsy, and it could just be my model, but I found it to be a bit annoying when dialing in power on-camera because you have to use the wheel. I use the SB5000s, beautifull made, fast recycletime, strong light aso but if I would consider to buy another Speedlight being in your shoes right now I'd buy two 860IIs plus the XPro trigger, resulting in a very capable system at 1/3 the price I payed for the two SB5000s. A comparison to Yongnuo or Godox can be made of course, they are cheaper but to my knowledge there are no repair facilities across the world.

Possibly the best thing that has been implemented in this new jog dial is the method of changing power. Since the jog dial is so easy to turn, you need to first activate the power changing option by pressing the left selector. At first, I thought this would be annoying, but it activates a new mode on the dial. By turning the dial you can either change power in 1/3 or 1/10 stops (depending on your settings) or you can press up and down on the selector to change power in full stops. Typically, I’ll make large changes more often than small ones, so this is a great setting for me. Typical first-party flashes in this price range—think Canon Speedlites and Nikon Speedlights—rely on AA batteries for power. The V1 has a removable lithium-ion cell, rated for 480 full-power flashes per charge. Ok, if the SB-5000 is made in China, you got me there, but we don't know what the working conditions and salaries are in Nikon vs. Godox factories in China. I would expect that the employees within Nikon factories enjoy roughly similar working conditions independent of location, though of course this is just my guess and not based on inside knowledge. I do know that Nikon flashes are repairable and do get serviced. The second downside is that the shape of the head means it won't fit many speedlight specific modifiers. Softboxes like SMDV's Speedbox series do not accommodate this shape, and despite the magnets being present in the head itself, MagMod's kit doesn't fit either. Hopefully this will change like some gel kits have. Magnetic Modifiers

So again I think Nikon speedlights to be overpriced. (not to mention Nikon was manufacturing in China too till october 2017 which renders our view on supporting the exploitation of workers at least discussable) The umbrella test in this review shows that an umbrella is more evenly lit. However, this is not the whole story: the umbrella used in the review is quite large at 173cm and with a smaller umbrella the difference will no longer be visible. But even so, I did the same test with my 60inch umbrella and sure enough, the round head of the V1 gave a more even illumination, clearly visible. Then I used the built-in wide-angle diffuser of my rectangular flash head and... the difference was gone. The built-in wide-angle diffuser in a rectangular flash head works wonders in an umbrella (you do lose about 1 stop). Undoubtedly Godox is one of the market’s most popular and trusted flash brands. They offer many advantages that make them ideal for photographers of all levels who use Nikon cameras. Godox is going strong with their innovations for flashtechnology they didn't steal it from Nikon because they passed Nikon some years ago allready.Powerful Performance: This Speedlite provides an incredible Guide Number and can be used for more creative photography options. Additionally, it supports slave functionality, enabling you to use more than one flash simultaneously without needing to buy any additional equipment! With its high-speed sync (HSS) capabilities, you can shoot beautiful photos at a maximum shutter speed of up to 1/8000s without sacrificing light output on Nikon. The V1 also has a modeling lamp. It's a small LED, but one that's softened by the fresnel diffuser, and a warm 3,330K color temperature. Its power is adjustable, and it casts an even light on your subject, but I wouldn't want to use it with a human model—the LED is a bright point of light that can definitely induce squinting, even with the diffuser dome attached. Accessory Kit

The GODOX V1-N flash is designed to provide photographers with an impressive and versatile lighting experience for Nikon Z6ii, Z5, D850, D3500 also other models. With its built-in wireless radio system, the flash offers full TTL support and high-speed sync capabilities. Depending on the lighting situation, it can be adjusted in power from 1/256 to 8 times more powerful, which makes it effective in a variety of lighting situations.

All I can say is that when I see I have one bar left. I will recharge. I won't push it since sod's law means I will run out of power at THE pivotal moment. Magnetic rim
