The Eris set from PreSonus is a high-definition studio-level pair of monitors. They capably provide accurate mixes. Inside each enclosure is a 3.5-inch low-frequency Kevlar transducer. The tweeters are a 1-inch ultra-low mass silk dome high-frequency transducer. The max volume is impressive, but if you crank it up to the max you will hear a noticeable distortion. Instead, you’ll want to keep it around 80% of the volume. The R980T model from the Edifier powered bookshelf speaker series is our lowest-priced product review. This single speaker is low profile at 2.4 x 15.7 x 2.2 inches and is meant to sit under your computer screen. But its unique form factor is ultimately hit or miss. More traditional desktop speakers can also vary pretty dramatically in size, from tall and thin towers to compact, to compact rounded designs, to boxier and somewhat bulkier options that mimic the shape of larger, traditional bookshelf speakers. Be sure to consider how much space you have on your desk before buying. But know that (often though not always) speakers with larger drivers and more solid cabinets can pump out more and better sound, and are less likely to vibrate or otherwise move around on your desk. In other words, don’t expect to be blown away by tiny, inexpensive speakers (in most cases). How We Test Speakers A speaker is a form of transducer. Technically speaking, it converts the electromagnetic waves it receives into sound-waves. Speakers are comprised of a stiff cone (driven by a voice coil attached to it), which is sat inside of a magnetic field. When a current is introduced, the coil pushes and pulls the cone in a piston-like fashion and this is what creates the waves.

To simplify the science behind this difference, larger speakers mean a wider frequency range is available – thus much louder and better quality audio.Overall, the sound is good but not great. At this price range, it can be hard to even tell the difference, so for casual listening, you may not even mind. Despite their lightweight construction and small footprint, these compact speakers can handle 100 decibels of uninterrupted sound pressure level.
Bass reflex enclosures are sometimes referred to as ported or vented boxes or sometimes even reflex ports.
