You might occasionally notice a jelly-like substance called mucus in your baby’s poo. This is usually nothing to worry about. However, if you frequently notice mucus in your baby’s poo alongside other symptoms including vomiting or discomfort, speak to your GP as it can be a sign of cow’s milk protein allergy 2,3. Read our article on cow's milk protein allergy for further information if you have any concerns. Re-place cap on the bottle and shake well until powder is fully dissolved. Both formulas contain 100% whey, partially hydrolyzed protein which is easier to digest than intact protein. Many formulas include an additional prebiotic ingredient: oligosaccharides. These are often referred to as FOS or GOS, produced commercially from lactose and sucrose, or 2’-FL or LNnT, artificially made to mimic oligosaccharides found in breast milk. SMA® Comfort is a nutritionally complete formula for the dietary management of colic and constipation. It can be used as the sole source of nutrition from birth in place of your usual formula feed, and can be mixed with foods once weaning has begun. Hipp Comfort datacard (2020). Formula milk provides babies with the nutrients they need to grow and develop. However, it does not have the same health benefits as breastfeeding for you and your baby. For example, it cannot protect your baby from infections. First infant formula (first milk) It's important to take extra care when making up and storing these products as powdered formula is not sterile and making it up at lower temperatures will not kill any harmful bacteria it may contain.

To transition to the new milk gradually you could replace one bottle of your baby’s current milk with one bottle of your baby’s new milk each day, keeping all the other feeds of the previous one. It may be a good idea to introduce the new feed when your little one is not too tired or irritable. Continue this way, increasing the number of feeds with new milk each day until all the feeds are with the new milk. Hungrier baby formula (hungry milk) is suitable from birth, but ask a midwife or health visitor for advice first. All babies will have a different pattern to their bowel movements. Constipation means when it is more difficult for your baby to have a poo, and symptoms include pooing less than 3 times in a week. Constipation in babies is usually easily managed.Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. Infant milks are suitable from birth when babies are not breastfed and should only be used on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist, or other professionals responsible for maternal and child care. Do not add extra powder or water to make feed stronger or weaker and do not press powder into scoop. Using too much or too little powder can make your baby ill.
