To do much is to have the power to place these people where they are [prison], and keep them where they are. There are murderers outside, and rapists, with their hands full with all they have to do, doing much; thieves, true perverts, college boys carrying attache cases, busy, busy, doing much. Torturers, doing much. Bishops, priests, and preachers, doing much. Statesmen, doing more. These captive men are the hidden price for a hidden and dreadful terror: the righteous must be able to locate the damned. To do much is to have the power and the necessity to dictate to the damned. If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin is a an angry and sometimes brutal love story set in the Bronx, New York.

The only real criticism is that I wanted to spend longer with Tish and Fonny as they struggle on into the future. I’m disappointed to report If Beale Street Could Talk was just ok for me. I wasn’t blown away. Perhaps my expectations were too high after all of the hype surrounding the book but I have to say, I felt letdown. It seems atypical for an offering of his, to experience this disjointed connection. I felt that, no matter how hard he tried, Mr. Baldwin could not access Tish's Voice. A lot of the dialogue in this novel felt inauthentic to me, but I struggled most particularly with almost every sentence that came out of Tish's mouth (not to mention that she was simultaneously unformed, yet omniscient). sense, smaller human unity will become more and more important. Those who are without them, like Fonny's friend Daniel, will probably not survive. Certainly they will not reproduce themselves. Fonny's real crime is "having

Narrated mostly from 19 year old Tish's view, this contextually (written in the 1970s) stunning work tells the story of love in an arena of severe and overt social and racial injustice for Afro Americans in an urban America. Tish's sculptor lifelong friend and now boyfriend Fonny is brashly wrongly accused of a dark crime, and Tish and the families seek to do all they possibly can against the immovable force of corrupt racist individuals and institutions. As the blurb states the story of the rollercoaster of emotions and actions of the main couple, as well as some of the family's evokes a sense of the blues!

Before I started reading, If Beale Street Could Talk, I understood that Fonny was going to be in jail and Tish was going to be pregnant. I knew this because I had watched the first several scenes in the movie based on Baldwin's book. Yes, I only watched a few scenes of the movie because the portrayal of Mrs. Hunt was over the top and unwatchable. It was adapted as a film of the same name, written and directed by Barry Jenkins, and released in theaters on December 14, 2018. To do this, she shows Mrs. Rogers a picture of Fonny and Tish, explaining that Tish is her daughter and that she’s going to have Fonny’s baby. Unfortunately, though, talking about this only dredges up Mrs. Rogers’s trauma, and she starts screaming. Shortly thereafter, she disappears once again—this time for good—and Sharon is forced to return to the United States in defeat. A second narrative line unfolds at the same time as the first, as Tish recalls the beginnings of her relationship with Fonny. She describes their noticing each other as children, their growing closeness as teens, and the moment when they both realized that their connection went deeper than either had believed. As she recalls their life together, Tish also describes Fonny’s passion for creating art out of wood or stone; the intensity of their sexual relationship; and how a friendly white landlord made it possible for them to start thinking about their future as a married couple.
