About this deal

It’s deceptive, how easy it is. You wouldn’t think that such a simple dish could be that amazing, but with good ingredients (your favorite chewy noodle, for instance. We used this flat xi’an style noodle similar to what we used in our Beijing Fried Sauce Noodle recipe), it’s going to win you over big time. For a while, my mom was going on and on about this dish, and how awesome it was. Having never tried it, I made it for the first time last weekend, and it was a serious epiphanic moment. Where have these noodles been all my life? Crispy Chow Mein–fried until crisp then served with a saucy stir fry on top – this is the traditional Chinese/Hong Kong way of serving Chow Mein noodles. These friends introduced me to a classic Chinese hot pot recipe, a method of making soup in which you gently cook raw vegetables in your serving bowl by pouring hot broth over the top, and allowing them to steep. In high school, I spent the summer in China studying Chinese history, the Mandarin language, and the Uighur language spoken widely in the North Western Chinese province of Xinjiang. I want to say that Chow Mein is my favourite noodle-child but I’m worried that I’ve said that in another recipe (or two… or three…😂).

Here’s a close up of the noodles. The supermarket version by Fantastic Noodles is slightly more yellow than it should be but it’s just as tasty. Can’t find Chow Mein Noodles?Diners can add whatever they like to the boiling liquid. They can then retrieve cooked food items from the pot with wire ladles, and flavor them with individual dipping sauces. We also tried their seafood flavored soy sauce, which has oyster extracts in it to give it a bit of extra umami. However, ‘Lost the Pot’ Noodles and some ‘Asian Street Style’ Pot Noodles are NOT suitable for vegetarians as they contain meat. Anyway, I’m not certain why the brand is named “Asian Street Style”, but I’m guessing they’re inspired by the whole ‘authentic’ Asian street food fad that I admittedly buy into as they’re almost always more exciting than plain old Chow Mein. So I go with the Pot Noodle Asian Street Style Thai Red Curry, a staple of Thai cuisine that’s pretty much never found near street food outside of Khao Rad Kaeng curry canteens. But I’m always excited for anything curry, and I’m already thinking of more Thai curry flavours, like panaeng, and massaman, and how awesome could Khao Soi be?

With all of us staying indoors and sharing each meal with those in our own households, it’s also a great at-home dining “event.” It’s a welcome break from routine, and a delicious one! In this post, we’ll talk about how to make hot pot at home. What Is Chinese Hot Pot? So don’t get too hung up on the exact noodle type! Concentrate on the sauce. The sauce, the sauce!! – Nagi xThere are twelve flavours of Pot Noodles to choose from, as well as three flavours Pot Noodle Fusions, five flavours of the potless ‘Lost The Pot Noodle’ and four flavours in the ‘Asian Street Style’ sister brand. The main ingredient in Pot Noodle noodles is wheat flour. The other ingredients vary depending on the flavour. Nissin Soba Noodles: I would probably eat noodles/noodles soups thrice a week in Asia. And I will always go with the noodles with a bit of meatiness, a bit of bite, a bit of chew. So this is where Nissin Soba Noodles add to this selection. In a small pot, heat the oil until shimmering. Carefully pour the hot oil over the bowl of noodles…

Soy sauce (light soy sauce, seasoned soy sauce, and seafood flavored soy sauce are all good options) All your cravings will be satisfied with items from China, Korea, Japan, Thailand and more – explore by country of cuisine to find firm favourites and intriguing delights you’ve never encountered before. Anyway, I go with itsu Satay Rice Noodles and I was genuinely surprised by the unlikely goodness of this pot noodle as the flat rice noodles and miso broth really bring a freshness to what is otherwise a junk food staple. The flavour of peanut sate is there as well, and while it’s not outstanding, it can easily be fixed with a bit of personal seasoning (salt, ground white pepper, and chilli flakes). These rice noodles are also gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, and oddly there’s no mention of peanut in the ingredients so they’re probably fine for allergies. Good job Itsu! Now, in 2020, I finally have the opportunity to put them head-to-head, and while I am familiar with almost all the original Super Noodle flavours, Batchelor’s say that flavours differs from the standard Super Noodle range. Exciting. But they don’t really look like they’ve changed. They just look like a chunk of Super Noodles squashed inside a cup. Exciting. Wood ears (soak to reconstitute, rinse any dirt or sand off, and remove any woody ends; cook time: 2-3 minutes)

Before you go!

When fall and winter roll around, one big treat tends to pop into our minds—Chinese hot pot. It’s a warm, comforting, and social meal to have with a close-knit group of family or friends. Plus, because all the food gets cooked at the table, it’s an easy meal to boot. And here’s how to make it. Make sure you have everything ready to toss in because once you start cooking, you’ll be plating up in just over 5 minutes – I told you it’s fast!! Wok NOT essential! The Pot Noodle brand is owned by Unilever, a company that sourced 99.6% of its palm oil sustainably in 2019 [ source]. Unilever is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and is working to drive change within the palm oil industry. We enjoyed Lee Kum Kee’s Sesame Sauce, which was a bit thinner than traditional Chinese sesame paste.

Most vegans accept that not all processed foods are made in a 100% vegan environment and accept the small risk of cross-contamination. It’s up to each individual to decide whether they are comfortable with this. Therefore, the use of palm oil should not be a reason for vegans to avoid Pot Noodles. Which Pot Noodles are vegan? But don’t mind me. Feel free to adjust the quantities of any of the seasonings in this dish to your liking. I myself tend to add way more chili and garlic than is probably advisable. Recipe InstructionsSo given the questionable origins of Itsu I was happy to branch out to satay (sate), a common street food staple in Southeast Asia which has become somewhat of a generic term for barbecue meat skewers. However sate is probably better known for its sauce, a delightful spiced peanut sauce (Sambal Kecang) from Indonesia (or Malaysia if you’re from Malaysia). And personally I like my ‘sate’ to be less sweet or coconutty, and more hot and fiery and Sumatran style. soft noodles(this recipe) –soaked in boiling water until soft then tossed with a sauce, vegetables and meat; or
