The writing style is fun and exciting, which I feel would be a plus point for young readers. The world-building is fabulous to say the least, and the characters are so so adorable and lovable. And to add an extra feather to the cap, it is illustrated by Chris Riddell. Well, what more can one ask for! Bevor ich mit dem Lesen begann, hatte ich dem Buch noch einmal schnell auf Lovelybooks einen kurzen Besuch abgestattet und dabei erstaunt festgestellt, dass die Bewertungen insgesamt nicht allzu positiv sind. Meine große Vorfreude auf „Das Geheimnis der Sternenuhr“ erhielt unweigerlich einen kleinen Dämpfer, muss ich gestehen. Zugleich steigerte sich aber auch meine Neugierde. Wie wird wohl mir die Geschichte gefallen? Werde ich ebenfalls, wie so manch andere, enttäuscht von ihr sein?

Auch wenn das Buch ja eher ein Buch für jüngere Leser ist, dachte ich mir, wenn ich nach leichter Lektüre suche, ist das nichts Schlechtes. Und prinzipiell fand ich die Geschichte auch gar nicht so schlecht, die Idee war wirklich gut, doch ich muss sagen, dass mir die Umsetzung nicht soo gefallen hat. Vermutlich lag das daran, dass ich nicht so die Zielgruppe bin, doch das hat mich bei manch anderen Büchern nicht unbedingt gestört. Hier war es aber so, dass ich mit den Figuren etwas meine Schwierigkeiten hatte. Auch wenn ein altersentsprechendes Verhalten natürlich klar ist, fand ich trotzdem, dass mir die Beziehung zu den Figuren etwas fehlte, ich konnte sie nicht so richtig aufbauen. Und das fand ich wirklich schade, denn die Welt an sich war sehr schön und die Handlung im Grunde auch, auch wenn ich sie etwas sehr vorhersehbar fand. Es gab dadurch für mich etwas wenige Überraschungsmomente, die nötig gewesen wären, um die Geschichte etwas aufzupeppen. Und obwohl sie eigentlich alleine ein Abenteuer erleben will, ist sie am Ende doch froh, dass ihre kleine Schwester Marie ihr hinterher schleicht. Denn im Land hinter der Tür gibt es Monster mit scharfen Klauen und Zähnen, einen sterbenden Wald, eine Stadt, die von einem selbstbezogenen König regiert wird, der eine noch schlimmere Königin heiraten will, und einen eingebildeten kleinen Prinzen, der trotz allen Zankens ein guter Freund werden könnte. Die Handlung an sich wird von Imogen meist wiedergegeben auch von anderen Figuren. Ich fand es düster und spannend. Ja, wie soll ich anfangen. Mich hat das Buch sehr überrascht! Warum? Naja das Buch wird ab 10 Jahren empfohlen, leider muss ich dazu sagen das ich es persönlich ziemlich brutal finde und das das ganze Buch durch. Die körperliche und Seelischen Qualen die in der Geschichte vorkommen. Ich finds nicht angebracht. Ab 13/14 je nach Kind ist es Ok. Aber für Kinder ab 10 Jahren.. Sorry no! This is not a story for the faint-hearted! There are some rather gruesome details. The monsters like to “slice and dice” their victims. Prejudice and bigotry are demonstrated by some characters. I found the cruelty to animals confronting. The story and characters create many points for discussion which will make this a useful book in classrooms, libraries and at home. Reader notes or teaching notes would be useful. A stunning cast of characters and settings have been created. Incredible reveals add tension and mystery to a fast-paced, multi-layered storyline.Inside this room are three gaps for cog cubes and two switches, one on either side of the middle gap. Korte hoofdstukken en vanzelfsprekende perspectiefwisselingen maken dat je het boek niet kunt wegleggen en daarbij regelmatig hardop grinnikt. Ik las 'Achter de Bergen' met een zucht uit en snak acuut naar boek drie.

Ten slotte speelt het verhaal zich af in een wonderlijke wereld met monsters en trollen, met mensen die in hutten wonen en met magische klokken die meer vertellen dat je op het eerste zicht zou denken. Heel veel kinderen gaan ongetwijfeld met ingehouden adem zitten luisteren naar het voorgelezen verhaal. Of wellicht verschuilen ze zich onder de dekens met een zaklamp om stiekem nog een extra hoofdstuk te lezen. And when danger threatens the kingdom and the crew are getting ready to save it, you start biting your nails. I watched their friendship grow and loved it. What I loved the most was watching Imogen get closer to her little sister Marie. That special sister bond was beautiful! Francesca Gibbons’s writing is so captivating, the world building phenomenal and the action suspenseful. Daarnaast gaan ze zich ongelooflijk kunnen herkennen in de hoofdpersonages, twee jonge zusjes die dankzij de schaduwmot terecht komen in een wonderlijke wereld. Welk kind droomt er nu niet van een magisch avontuur, ook al betekent dat dat het af en toe een beetje gevaarlijke wordt? En welk kind herkent het nu niet dat je af en toe je zus (of broer) wel achter het behang zou willen plakken (tot je samen een spannend avontuur beleeft, natuurlijk)?Waar het eerste boek vooral de vibe van west-Europese sprookjes heeft en zich afspeelt in het bos, ontvouwt het avontuur in dit deel zich onder de aarde en in het water: van steen gevormde monsters met brandende kruinen, riviermeerminnen met scherpe tanden en schubben, hebberig makend zilver uit de mijnen. Opnieuw een sprookje, met slechteriken, nog ergere slechteriken, gierige volwassenen, behulpzame ouders en monsters die kinderen uit dorpen laten verdwijnen. Ondanks haar vele zorgenbeestjes blijkt Imogen onverschrokken zus Marie te behoeden voor kwaad - maar misschien is het andersom wel Marie die haar redt. The North Star I can't highlight how much I love seeing Chris Riddell's illustrations, they are so beautiful and really captures the characters and scenes that Francesca has created, although I wish there were more sprinkled throughout, but then again I'm just a big fan of his work. Could the monsters, that descend on the city each night, be terribly misunderstood?Could the king have a dark secret that’s destroying the kingdom?Strangest of all, can little sisters sometimes be useful?
