About this deal

Character Development: Largely with Anya, she comes off as a moody and unlikeable character at the beginning of the story, only caring about herself. As she goes through her encounter with Emily, she begins to realize her own faults and how she previously thought of others were wrong. Ultimately growing to become a more caring character. There, Anya discovers that Sean habitually cheats on Elizabeth with her knowledge. Distraught, Anya leaves the party, which makes Emily angry and confused as she believed Anya and Sean were destined for each other. Anya later notices Emily becoming more controlling and adjusting her appearance by straightening her hair and smoking ghostly cigarettes. Anya goes to the library without Emily to research the killer; there she learns that Emily had no fiancé, but had instead murdered a young couple in their home after her unrequited love rejected her, and then died running from the authorities. The Plague has left a population divided between Elites and Ordinaries—those who have powers and those who don’t; now, an Ordinary teen fights for her life.

Overall, “Anya’s Ghost” is a fantastic book about dealing with peer pressure and the importance of being yourself no matter how different you are from other people. I would strongly recommend this book to any fan of young adult graphic novels and fans who love a good ghost story! Love Makes You Crazy: Emily's excuse for burning a couple alive because she was in love with the boy and he'd rejected her, saying outright that love can make you do crazy things. What worked- the author was sincere. The story was a genuine look at an American high school. It felt to me as if Daria’s World was a Russian immigrant and transplanted in the 21st century. So I did reminisce and got a few laughs, especially the gym class scene. Expository Hairstyle Change: Emily learns to flatten her hair to create a more modern look, showing how she's becoming stronger in what she can do as a ghost and how her relationship with Anya is changing. But the whole story with Emily, the ghost, didn’t really move or excite me (I do have to admit that I couldn’t read this at night—Ghosts scare me!).Horrible Judge of Character: Emily is this to when it comes to romance. It's one thing when she makes a simple assumption that Sean will make a good match for Anya, as she didn't know what he was like at the time. It's another thing when, after witnessing him cheat on his girlfriend with his best friend's girlfriend, she tries to shoehorn Anya to go out with Sean anyway because he was "interested" in her (despite that he was 'interested' in her in all the wrong ways. Gym Class Hell: Anya paints gym class that way during the bleep test, although it's pretty standard otherwise.

Anya's Ghost is a YA (maybe grades 5-8) novel by Russian-American Brosgol. It's the story of a Russian-Ameican girl named Anya that wants badly to fit in. She smokes to look cool, she calls herself Brown instead of her long and complicated Russian name, she avoids Russian-American nerd boy Dima, she wants to lose weight so avoids fatty Russian foods, she is sort of attracted to a hot non-Russian guy. Sort of YA high school world. Echoes of American Born Chinese re: wanting to fit in, being somewhat ashamed of your heritage. This graphic style paired up with the one creepy scene/plot twist is the only reason I rated this as high as I did. In many ways, Emily serves as a dark counterpart to Anya; whereas Anya pines over Sean from afar but does not pursue him until encouraged by Emily, Emily let her own unrequited infatuation go too far, murdering the object of her affections and his own significant other after being rejected. Emily likewise alters her physical appearance and behavior during her time with Anya, changing her hairstyle and beginning to smoke ghostly cigarettes as she adjusts to the world of the twenty-first century. Her behavior is reminiscent of Anya's but taken to the extreme, and Anya's recognition of that fact leads to her eventual change of mindset. Ultimately, through its supernatural elements and keen observations of teenage life, Anya's Ghost warns its readers about the perils of wanting what others ostensibly have and the importance of remaining true to oneself. Who stars in Anya’s Ghost: Cast List

As I mentioned, it's the Friday of a three day weekend so I'll keep this short, but Anya's Ghost is a real keeper. Brosgol deftly accomplishes so much in so little space. There is an economy of text but an abundance of meaning. The message is wonderful. The illustrations are engaging. The heroine is spectacular. The more I learned about Anya the more I celebrated the differences she despised. I really enjoyed and highly recommend this book. People might think five-years-olds can't be cruel, but I have some strong evidence to the contrary." When I was in high school, there wasn’t a lot of bullying. And there weren’t really any cliques. Or maybe there were but I was just too blissfully ignorant to notice. It’s not like I was especially popular. It’s not as if I wasn’t kind of nerdy or kind of artsy or kind of freaky. I mean, look at me.

Everyone has problems. Even the person or couple you envy for being "perfect", could in reality have bigger issues than you have. Love Martyr: Elizabeth. She'll stand guard while Sean cheats on her with other boys' girlfriends because she wants him to love her. However, I really liked the Ghost. I feel like the ghost was the only character in this story that actually had some personality. I don't care if its actions were evil or not, this particular character had substance. It advised Anya, it had opinions for god's sake! Anya, on the other hand, had none and was extremely bitter and acted like a cow. A bad one, since I like cows that have four feet. In time, Emily reveals that she was once engaged to a man who died fighting in World War I. She also tells Anya that she fell into the well while fleeing a murderer. Anya promises to help Emily discover the identity of the man who killed her so that her spirit can rest in peace, and Emily agrees to continue helping Anya fit in at school.
