Also expect to find lots of region-specific apps such as BBC iPlayer in the UK, HBO Max in the US and Stan in Australia. We have state-of-the-art testing facilities in London, Bath and Reading, where our team of expert reviewers do all of our testing. This gives us complete control over the testing process, ensuring consistency. What's more, all review verdicts are agreed upon by the team as a whole rather than an individual reviewer, again helping to ensure consistency and avoid any personal preference. Try disconnecting a device and see if your TV can connect. If the TV connects after removing a device, it means your Wi-Fi network is congested. Look up ‘unassuming’ in the dictionary and you will probably find a picture of the Samsung UE43AU7100. This 43-inch LCD TV doesn’t flaunt a particularly flamboyant design, doesn’t sell for a particularly outrageous price – either high or low – and its features list is certainly no Lord Of The Rings-style epic. It's worth remembering that 40-inch screens, while once the pinnacle of high-end TV tech, are now considered a small size compared to many other TV displays. If you're wondering whether there's a replacement for the A90K on the way, there isn't at this stage. While 2022's A80K and A95K models have been replaced (with the A80L and A95L respectively), the 42-inch and 48-inch A90K models are remaining in Sony's TV lineup for an extra year. While it probably wouldn’t be fair to say that LG has neglected its C series models this year, it does seem as if the attention lavished on the G3– the world’s first MLA OLED TV– has left the C3 in the shadows somewhat, with little to no hardware upgrades. The What Hi-Fi? team has more than 100 years experience of reviewing, testing and writing about consumer electronics.

Other useful connections include optical and stereo outputs, which can be used in lieu of HDMI ARC to connect legacy audio equipment. Headphone outputs are still fairly common, too, though Bluetooth is also supported by most TVs now and some models now feature the latter but not the former. If the TV is not on mute, and you have plugged in an external device through the HDMI port, make sure that the device is set to output on the TV. If you notice screen pixelation or stuttering, t his issue usually has to do with the quality of your connection or signal. We've also seen increased production of 42-inch TVs in recent years, with TV brand LG bringing out 42-inch OLED TVs, like the LG OLED42C2 at the top of this guide.

Although most manufacturers and buyers focus on larger TVs, there's still a lot of interest in smaller models for people looking for the best 43-inch 4k TV. There aren't as many options in this size as in the larger ones, but some premium models and cheaper TVs are still available. It's easier to look for a 42 or 43-inch TVthan a 40-inch one, as the formersaremuch more common, so you'll have more choice if you can fit a 42 or 43-inch model in your entertainment center. There are also some 42-inch OLEDs coming out, which will further expand the selection in that size category. Note that some TVs will require you to manually enable 'HDMI CEC' in your TV settings for the ARC system to work correctly. The Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has today (Wednesday 22 November) announced a range of tax, benefits and savings measures. We round up the key announcements and what they mean for you. For ease, we've included 40-inch TVs as well as the best 42-inch TVs and 43-inch TVs in this guide. Of these two 'dynamic' HDR formats, Dolby Vision is by far the most prevalent, both in terms of TVs and content, and if you have to choose between one and the other, that's the one we'd recommend. That said, you can now buy TVs from the likes of Philips and Panasonic that support both Dolby Vision and HDR10+.Samsung's image processing makes it look refined and impressive cinematic, and the eight speakers built into it means it'll sound far better than the competition here, and you may not need to add a soundbar for clear audio. All of this does mean its the most expensive option here, though. For those using digital antennas, you can change the location of the antenna to see if it improves the signal. It may not have fancy displays, but if you want a reliable workhorse to provide you with home entertainment, Sharp won’t let you down.

In this guide, we've also included several 42-inch and 43-inch TVs, which might give you a bit of extra screen space if the best 40-inch TVs seem a touch too small. What about 42-inch TVs and 43-inch TVs? With the former, you only need to replace the HDMI cable, while the latter just means you have to wait for it to fix. You’re better off using the automatic resolution, rather than forcing a setting that your Internet connection cannot handle. A 40-inch TV should come with 4K resolution, but you'll be able to see the benefits more clearly on a larger size. We find that a 40-inch TV is a pretty decent size for a single viewer not sitting too far away, but for a family or group of flatmates it's not ideal. Hot on the heels of LG's first 42-inch OLED TV came the 42-inch Sony A90K, which uses the same panel.

UHD Tuner DVB-T/T2/C/S/S2 (MPEG4 + HEVC/H.265 (10-bit))

HDMI Audio Return Channel (HDMI ARC) is a feature that allows soundbars and surround sound systems to use fewer cables. An HDMI cable (version 1.4 or higher) can be connected from your TV’s HDMI ARC port to an HDMI ARC port on a soundbar or surround sound receiver. This connection will route audio from another device connected to the TV to the soundbar. That could be a gaming console, Blu-ray player or media streaming device. This reduces the clutter of having audio cables trailing from the TV and other devices to the soundbar. Roku is a stable smart TV operating system that many brands use. Since it’s a widely used platform, you can expect support for a lot of apps. Therefore, the higher the refresh rate, the smoother the moving image appears. By contrast, an exaggeratedly low refresh rate of 10Hz would make fast-paced content appear to jump, stutter and jolt. 50Hz - 60hz is going to be fine for most users. And don’t be fooled by their small form factor. Many of the best 40, 42 and 43-inch TVs don’t compromise on functionality compared to the best 65-inch TVs or the best 75-inch TVs even – they can give you 4K resolution and HDR (high dynamic range) – for ultra-crisp visuals and bright colors. Plus, just like their bigger siblings, you’ll get the same smart TV interfaces with streaming services built in for all your regular Netflix and Disney Plus binges. If you are a gamer, it's also worth considering the next-gen gaming features of your prospective new TV. Xbox Series X and PS5 gamers can gain a competitive advantage on certain games if their TV supports 4K 120Hz, while VRR support can result in a smoother gameplay experience. ALLM, meanwhile, simply ensures that you automatically get the best visual experience from both games and movies / TV shows. If you are a more casual gamer or not a gamer at all, you can pretty much disregard these features, and it's likely that doing so will save you a lot of cash.

You can do a reset before doing any of the troubleshooting above. But ideally, it should be done as one of the last things. Testing a TV is a long and complex process because a modern TV simply does so much. Not only does it need to handle a variety of content resolutions – standard-def, 1080p, 4K and sometimes 8K – and both standard dynamic range and high dynamic range (the latter in a number of formats), all of which need to be specifically tested, it also has a sound system with various advanced settings and a full smart platform. A TV is an all-in-one device in the best sense, but that also makes it a challenging review proposition. While LCD is no longer Samsung’s only TV technology, the brand clearly still puts it at the heart of its TV world. So much so that Samsung’s 2022 flagship LCD TVs are positioned higher in the brand’s range than its new QD-OLED model. Autumn Statement: Workers to pay less in national insurance – but rate cuts don't offset the freezing of personal tax thresholds The first thing to look at is the remote control. There might be a defective power button that causes the problem.

You don’t have to spend long in the AU7100’s company, though, to realise that a TV doesn’t have to be an extrovert to stand out from the crowd. Solid processing and a thoughtful, balanced picture that actually seems to have had some care and attention lavished on it can be more than enough. The Sony A90K OLED is a great OLED TV with Sony's well-known excellent image processing feature. However, the LG C3 OLED is the better choice with its better gaming features, higher peak brightness, and pretty good image processing features. These days, it's all about HDMI, which is used to connect everything from set-top boxes to video streamers, Blu-ray players to games consoles. Thanks to ARC/eARC (Audio Return Channel / Enhanced Audio Return Channel), a single HDMI connection can even be used to output sound to an AV receiver or soundbar at the same time as it receives a video signal.
