About this deal

Poultry Shield is a liquid cleaner and sanitising product by Biolink that is best applied to your hen houses with a pressure sprayer. It works by breaking down organic matter and eradicating the mites' habitat. Powders tend to have a lasting effected and are easily dusted around the hen house both in the bedding and nest boxes

Sometimes, the natural remedies just don’t cut it. I’ve never had an infestation so bad that my natural choices can’t fight it off, but I also live in the frozen north, where mites (who prefer warm spring and summer temperatures) tend to die off for 5 months out of the year. days later, spray the whole housing unit again with a 6% solution of Smite Professional and re-apply Smite Organic Powder or Spray to nesting areas, crevices and perches. This will treat any mite eggs which have hatched since the initial treatment. In severe infestations, the treatment should be repeated every 7-10 days until the infestation is under control. If your birds are showing signs of anaemia or are looking unwell then give them a vitamin and iron boost with Agrivite Red Mite Rescue Remedy to rebuild their iron balance.

Bringing You Closer To Your Pets

Following the hour’s soak, thorughouly brush down and clean your hen house and then hose away all debris – which will no doubt contain the dead mites. If you haven’t got red mite and the weather is warm enough for them (May to October in the UK) then skip step 1 and go straight to step 2. Preventative Measures. 1. Getting rid of an infestation. Poultry Shield comes in a concentrated form and so needs to be diluted 1 part concentrate to 9 parts water. Use it to clean in the following ways. Permethrin comes in both liquid and powder form. It’s intended for direct application onto your hens and as a coop spray. Permethrin is highly toxic to cats, however, so keep your cats away from the coop during treatment and make sure to wash well after treating your birds. Scaly Leg Mites

Rub as much into the perches as you can. Red mite will avoid the diatom and will crawl around it if they can, so make sure they have to crawl through it to get a feed.

Diatom Powder can also be used in a similar manner to a louse powder and can be applied directly onto the bird. In the henhouse pay particular attention to perches and nest boxes to kill any other remaining mites. Or you can add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a gallon of water. It will work from the inside out, expelling through the skin to repel mites and lice. This might not be enough to use on its own as a treatment for an infestation. But it could prevent future problems if you use apple cider vinegar once a week. DIY Mite And Lice Spray Repeat the whole cleaning process if there are still lots of mites in 5 to 7 days. You will find you might not need to spend as long on the washing as there won’t be as many mites. The second step also double up as my ‘preventative’ measures if you haven’t yet got a bad infestation

Corrugated cardboard – make ‘traps’ to fit on the underside of perches. As these fill up, remove them and burn. Red mite will hide in the folds thinking that they cannot be seen and by the morning will have turned it a reddish brown colour. Finally, I will dust the hens down between their feathers with Red Mite Powder to give them some respite during the night when the mites are active. Beware of what you read! Then, give the coop’s dark nooks and crannies a generous sprinkle with some Absorbacide (a natural insecticide) or diatomaceous earth. Make sure that when you apply these, that they do not get wet - they will not be as effective. Wearing a set of gloves and also dust masks is advisable - these powders aren’t toxic, but it is a fine powder, so might give you a sneezing fit! These critters are so small that they can not be seen with the human eye - however, they can easily be detected by the effects they leave on your hens.In more temperate regions, where mother nature never helps you fight off the mites, you may need a stronger solution. Unfortunately, most chemical mite killers are also dangerous to other animals. The safest option is Permethrin. We advise using Diatomaceous Earth powder as a preventative product, or as part of a mite control treatment to reduce mites and lice in your poultry. Creosote applied at least annually to the hen-house. It would help if you had the ‘old fashioned’ creosote (banned in 2003). Sadly Creosote substitute sold in DIY stores doesn’t seem to have the same result. It is illegal to sell or use Creosote now unless it is for professional use. It can still usually be bought from agricultural suppliers. Completely remove all bedding, putting it in secure, disposable garden bags or incinerate if you have a garden burner.
