About this deal

The impressive mosaic of Christ in Majesty, in the apse, flanked by the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist, survived the fire. It evokes the mosaics in the church of Monreale, Sicily. Although it is said that the mosaic was the work of Cimabue, only the head of Saint John was executed by that artist in 1302, his last work, since he died in Pisa the same year. The cupola, at the intersection of the nave and transept, was decorated by Riminaldi showing the assumption of the Virgin. The architect Mauro Codussi had initially developed a project of the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli.

Those visiting Pisa for the first time must start with its most iconic, world-famous monument, the Leaning Tower that stands in Piazza del Duomo behind the cathedral of which it is a part. Although it may seem like a monument in itself, the Tower of Pisa originated as the bell tower of the cathedral. album, although, cannot be considered a "Masterpiece"... at least had deserved a 4 stars quotation ! The church also contains the bones of Saint Ranieri, Pisa's patron saint, and the tomb of Holy Roman Emperor Henry VII, carved by Tino da Camaino in 1315. That tomb, originally in the apse just behind the main altar, was disassembled and moved many times over the centuries for political reasons. While the sarcophagus is still in the cathedral, some of the statues were put in the Camposanto or at the top of the cathedral's façade. The original statues are now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. The façade, of grey marble and white stone set with discs of coloured marble, was built by a master named Rainaldo, as indicated by an inscription above the middle door: Rainaldus prudens operator. When you enter the church, you pass under a “Barco”, a platform intended for the convent's nuns; the convent built simultaneously as the church has given space to dwelling houses. Above the doors are four rows of open galleries with, on top, statues of the Madonna with Child and, on the corners, the Four Evangelists. The building, as have several in Pisa, has tilted slightly since its construction, though not nearly to the extent of the nearby Tower. The most interesting asset of the band is the warm sound with two keyboards and absence of guitars. There The cathedral has a prominent role in determining the beginning of the Pisan New Year. Between the tenth century and 1749, when the Tuscan calendar was reformed, Pisa used its own calendar, in which the first day of the year was March 25, the feast day of the Annunciation of Mary. Years were counted such that the Pisan New Year begins nine months before the ordinary one. The exact moment is determined by a ray of sun that, through a window on the left side, falls on an egg-shaped marble, just above the pulpit by Giovanni Pisano; this occurs at noon.

really soft songs, "Verso Il Sole" & "Una Storia Fiabesca" had for short moments clearly elements of Initially, this icon was a triptych, with, in its central part, the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus in her arms and, on each side, Saint James and Saint Anthony. Criterion (i): Artistically unique because of its spatial design, the Piazza del Duomo contains four absolute architectural masterpieces: the cathedral, the baptistery, the bell tower and the Campo Santo. Within these monuments are such world-renowned art treasures as the bronze doors and mosaics of the cathedral, the pulpits in the baptistery and cathedral, the frescoes of the Campo Santo, and many others. And although the sum was already quite attractive, we must also give Pietro Lombardo a lot of credit because his task was far from easy. At the east end of the exterior, high on a column rising from the gable, is a modern replica of the Pisa Griffin, the largest known Islamic metal sculpture, the original of which was placed there probably in the 11th or 12th century, and is now in the Cathedral Museum.

On either side of the staircase, placed directly on the railings, you can admire pretty statuettes representing the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, the Angel Annunciator, Saint Francis and Saint Clare. We also notice two polychrome cabochon hooks, the same we can see on the façade of Palazzo Dario on the Grand Canal.

The cathedral has two aisles on either side of the nave. The transept consists of three aisles. The church is known also as the Primatial, the archbishop of Pisa having been a Primate since 1092. This trend explains their somewhat astonishing presence in this “reliquary” church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In the first years of the 21st century the administration offices and the chapter moved again to a nearby palace close to the archbishopric. Only a few rooms on the ground floor are still used as offices for the surveillance and technical staff. After the move, the upper rooms were transformed in a platform for temporary exhibitions (2014). This is the first time people can actually visit those rooms. They completed the church in 1489; consecrated it on December 31, 1489, placing the miraculous icon on its altar. Just before returning her soul, the poor dying woman would then have turned, looking at the place of the miraculous icon, imploring the Virgin to her rescue. A Jewel, a masterpiece, a splendour, a sandalwood box, an angel with blond wings, a jewel of the Venetian Renaissance; this little votive church got entitled to all the superlatives since the end of its construction in 1489, and it has them and still deserves them amply. Church and canal Noble materials emphasize this harmonious elegance, Istrian stone and polychrome marbles, including beautiful pink marbles, porphyry and cipolin with concentric veins (cipolin is a light marble formed entangled calcite crystals).
