Carmellose sodium comes in a bottle with an eye dropper, or as a box of single-dose droppers. The single-dose droppers do not contain preservatives. How to use the eye drops

If you still don't have relief after trying different products, the next step might be to try one or more artificial tear ointments. These can temporarily cause blurred vision, so you might prefer to apply the ointment just before bedtime. Use the carmellose sodium eye drops within the expiry date on the bottle. Use them within 4 weeks of opening, unless your drops come with different instructions. This will help to prevent the risk of eye infections and the eye drops not working so well. As a precautionary measure until further information is available, UKHSA has recommended that all carbomer containing eye gels are avoided where possible in individuals with cystic fibrosis; patients being cared for in critical care settings (e.g. intensiveGel drops fall under the category of artificial tears, but manufacturers formulate them to stay in the eye longer and provide more moisturization than other types of artificial tears. Commonly known as Hypromellose, brand names such as Evolve® include a Hypromellose option for the relief of dry eye. There are many other brand names of this type of eye lubricant as it is commonly used for milder dry eye symptoms. When comparing brands it is always important to look at the ingredients. Another product containing Hypromellose that is preservative-free is Xailin Hydrate. Eye gels However, gel drops can cause temporary blurriness in vision until the drops settle into the eye. These drops are suitable for people with cases of moderate-to-severe dry eye. Lubricating eye drops work by adding some of the same elements that your tears naturally have.Thishelps your tear film work more effectively to protect the surface of your eyes. Eye ointment: Pull down the lower lid and squeeze about 1/2 a centimetre (1/4 of an inch) of ointment into each eye. You need to take care not to touch the eye with the end of the tube. If you use carmellose sodium with other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes before using your other eye drops. The second eye drops can wash out the carmellose sodium and it may not work as well.Mild side effects: Eye drops and ointment can cause mild stinging, blurred sight or a funny taste in the mouth soon after putting them in. There is a potential risk of contamination of specific brands of carbomer eye gels with a type of bacteria called Burkholderia cenocepacia. An investigation by UKHSA has identified a potential association with these specific eye gels. Investigation and testing are still ongoing and these eye gels are being recalled as a precaution. The UKHSA highlighted that while preliminary findings suggest a common link to a carbomer containing lubricating eye gel, the investigation is ongoing and confirmatory testing has not yet been conclusive. No deaths are known to be associated with the outbreak. If appropriate, there is a poster attached to the FSN that can be used to draw attention to the recall. Investigations into whether any other products are affected continue. So, as a precautionary measure, and until further information is available, the UKHSA recommends that individuals with cystic fibrosis avoid using carbomer-containing lubricating eye gels where possible. If you have CF and are currently using eye lubricating gel and are unsure if this is carbomer-containing or have any questions concerning this, please speak to your CF clinical team. UKHSA and partners are working to confirm the source of the infections and will provide more information on their investigations as soon as possible.

If you forget to use your eye drops, use them when you need them next or when it’s time for your next dose. What if I use too much? Vitamin A and phospholipids are natural constituents of the tear film, and their antioxidant action prevents damage caused by reactive oxygen species and facilitates homeostasis and the retention of the tear film.1 Vitamin A and phospholipids control the evaporation of the tear film. 1
