About this deal

I started by watching the anime version which at this time is being released and could not wait for the ending so I decided to read the manga instead. I will say Orange is now one of my very favorites (anime and manga) due to its beautifully done story line and amazing characters. This review is spoiler-free but has some suggestive information of the plot. I have not read Dreamin' Sun, but I LOVED that crossover bonus manga/chapter at the end! It was so fun and found I definitely wanted to read that series at some point just so I could know who the characters were! LOL! Digital goods, open DVDs and Blu-rays, smart art prints, mystery bundles, and final sale items are excluded from the return policy. In true fashion, this final volume starts just as heart-hitting as every volume prior to this one has been. In fact, after the first chapter, I had to put it down when I first started it because I was not "in that mindset" where I felt I could read and handle this volume.

The story revolves around a group of 6 friends during their high school years. Although all of them are fairly present throughout the story and have a goal in common keeping them together, I felt the story revolved mostly around Naho, Kakeru and Suwa. Everyone in the “gang” has a personality of their own and a heart of gold so they are all very likeable. However, since the main characters (namely Naho, Kakeru and Suwa) are explored the most in the story, they are the ones with the most development and personal growth. I think the characters personalities, the fact they were very genuine and good people, and that they were very consistent in the way they were throughout the story made Orange as a whole a great anime/manga. Enough with the art, another major factor to make a successful romance drama is to have great characters, which the reader can connect or sympathize with, so that we would root for them, and cheer when they finally got together. Everyone can be summarized in just one sentence. Naho is too dumb to do anything on her own, Kakeru is too blind to know how much his friends cared for him, Suwa is way unrealistically kind, and the other three are pretty much irrelevant for most part of the plot. I really fail to push myself to root for the main couple, and when they finally be together, I was like "yeah, okay". Their romance is totally hollow, I fail to feel why those two like each other, and why they should be together in the end, I really can't.

You don't see any of these in the Orange manga, which is supposed to fall in the exact same category as its shoujo romance sisters. When our main girl sees the main dude, at most we see her blushing, and that's it. Empty. When the art of the manga isn't that good, all you could hope is to have a good plot and good characters to make it up, but Orange ended up as a great disappointment, especially the manga. The most criticized part about the anime version was how badly drawn the characters were, in which they often came as lazily drawn faces and became totally off-model, and what do you know... The art in the manga was amazing, there are a lot of chapters that show so much color and they were beautiful. The scenery displayed in the manga was also really neat and the character’s design was very pleasant to the eyes. The characters were somewhat average but given the fact that they are “normal people” in a “normal word” it made sense they were that way. I also felt the art was very consistent throughout the chapters so all in all, the art was a good asset.
