About this deal

While discussing the merits of kings, Colon and Nobby chat about how if you make yourself useful to a king, he makes you a Knight. At the end of the book, Vetinari knights Vimes at Carrot's "request". Edward d'Eath, an Assassin and son of a down-and-out noble family, becomes convinced that the restoration of the Ankh-Morpork monarchy will solve the social change in the city which he blames for his family's humbling. He researches the history of the royal family and determines that Carrot Ironfoundersson is in fact the rightful heir to the throne.

Born Terence David John Pratchett, Sir Terry Pratchett sold his first story when he was thirteen, which earned him enough money to buy a second-hand typewriter. His first novel, a humorous fantasy entitled The Carpet People, appeared in 1971 from the publisher Colin Smythe.

There are over 40 books in the Discworld series, of which four are written for children. The first of these, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, won the Carnegie Medal.

Men at Arms is a fantasy novel by British writer Terry Pratchett, the 15th book in the Discworld series, first published in 1993. It is the second novel about the Ankh-Morpork City Watch on the Discworld. Lance-constable Angua von Überwald, later in the series promoted to the rank of Sergeant, is introduced in this book. Lance-constable (in the course of the novel promoted to Acting-constable) Detritus is introduced as a new member of the watch as well, though he had already appeared in other Discworld novels, most notably in Moving Pictures. Also notable is the only appearance of Lance-constable Cuddy (also promoted to Acting-constable). In the Discworld series of novels by Terry Pratchett, Sam Vimes is the cynical but likable captain of the City Watch of the fictional city-state of Ankh-Morpork. [1] [2] In the 1993 novel Men at Arms, the second novel focusing on the City Watch through Vimes' perspective, Pratchett introduces the "Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness" through Vimes musing on how expensive it is to be poor: [2] [3] But most of Pratchett’s humor has an edge to it, an edge of looking at the mundane and seeing the loony-ness beneath, such as with clowns (who play several significant parts in Men at Arms): Standing Between the Enemies: Carrot had a truly epic example when he successfully shamed two armies of trolls and dwarves. They were ready to rip each other apart until he came and basically told them to stop it or he'll arrest the lot of them. When it works, the other Watch members are astounded and a little alarmed.Preceded by Lords and Ladies, followed by Soul Music. Preceded in the Watch series by Guards! Guards!, followed by Feet of Clay. Like all of Terry Pratchett's books, "Men at Arms" is an absolute delight. It is the sort of book that makes you happy. Read it. You're going to love. Just don't listen to this version of the audiobook. The performance is truly unbearable. It is as if the readers do not know the characters. This is book 15 in the Discworld series. By this time the characters are very well established and there is no way in the Discworld that they sound as these readers (I don't want to call them performers, sorry) make them sound. Vetinari for instance is notably tall, thin and smart as a whip. He is described as a predatory flamingo (haha!), but to hear him speak in this audiobook you would think he's a huge, slow, barrel-chested guy, And Death! Anyone who knows anything about Death, knows that he SPEAKS IN A VOICE LIKE THE SLAMMING OF COFFIN LIDS. (Not yelling at you! Death always speaks in all caps =) But in this book Death speaks in a low, raspy voice. No. No. I just couldn't bear it, I couldn't. I tried, I promise you I did, because it's Terry Pratchett and I love absolutely all of his books, but I couldn't.
