Two primary syntheses were constructed on the decision‐making process and the need for decision‐making aids, respectively.

In a qualitative synthesis, primary qualitative studies are integrated to develop a theory or evidence-based interventions. Struggling to find meaning’ comprised four sub-themes; ‘Communication and connection’, ‘Striving to cope and manage’, ‘Struggling to achieve a safe pregnancy and childbirth’, and ‘Maintaining bodily integrity’. Second, we found that the acknowledgement of poststroke fatigue by stroke survivors and their significant others were important for the experience of poststroke fatigue. Conclusions There were few high-quality trials that tested interventions to improve clinicians' recruitment activity in RCTs. Steps for the retrieving qualitative studies are described and criteria for appraising the studies are provided.

Qualitative survey findings appear similar in form to unadjusted or minimally adjusted quantitative findings and, when addressing the same relationship, can be summed. Qualitative studies were included if they investigated clinicians' attitudes to recruiting patients to RCTs. A total of 8,487 citations were identified, 114 full text articles were assessed, and 9 articles were selected for review. Medline, PsycINFO, ERIC, Scopus and Current Contents databases from the earliest available date to December 2008.

In the course of a methodological project, the authors found a remarkable uniformity in the way findings were produced and presented, no matter what the stated or implied frame of reference or method.Quality assessment of included articles was made using the Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewers' Manual.

It can help, for example, with appraising, summarising, and communicating the results and implications of otherwise unmanageable quantities of data.
