About this deal

I can explain the rules to new players in minutes, but it is still satisfying (and exciting) to play. And both of them lost to Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King, a traditional (broadly speaking) Eurogame from Alexander Pfister and Andreas Pelikan, the same pair of designers who won the year before! Nonetheless, while the whole is exactly the value of the sum of its parts, it manages to be an extremely likeable game. In the end, the player with the best kingdom—and not the richest player—becomes the sovereign of the island. A tile with three sheep on it is worth considerably more if you’re about to score the 1 point per sheep condition for the first time than if you’re about to score it for the third time.

They say that the design is beautiful, the material used makes a good impression, and the game is imaginative and different every time. Where Isle of Skye shines, though, is in the way it combines these familiar elements into a compelling yet accessible package that appeals to novice and experienced players alike. It’s a fantastic addition, which is great for Big Box owners, bad for early adopters, but also bad for Druids. Isle of Skye, in its unassuming package, took me by surprise and is without question one of my favorite games from 2015. Carcassonne is a game of continental sized importance in the board game landscape, and Isle of Skye never ventures out of eye-shot of its shores.

I have to admit, during that long period of absence, I started to miss this Alexander Pfister’s and Andreas Pelikan’s creation. Once all the tiles are placed, the end of round scoring begins with the current round counter deciding what combination of rules will be applied. One of the 3 tiles is discarded and the remaining two tiles become available for purchase by other players at the cost you have set. The "Kennerspiel des Jahres 2016" promo tile was given out to celebrate the winning of the "Kennerspiel" award in 2016. They mention that it's a great game with plenty of playability, and the randomly chosen tiles and goals make good repeat play. The lack of available expansions which really add to the base game is also a shame but hopefully something that can be rectified in the future.

Each tile will display some of these in various configurations but also may have buildings, animals or other decorations that have point scoring potential. It still is a very smooth and light game, so do not worry if you are a beginner in board games: I'd say this game is for casual players and advanced players looking for something non-complex, alike. The Agricola-sized box already includes the family-friendly Druids expansion as well as the Tunnel Tiles mini-expansion and offers hours and hours of gameplay.I don’t really want to play them together because then the number of tiles each round becomes incalculable nonsense, and I’d rather play with this simpler, more effective expansion than Druids. Each provides a different way to score points, and which window they appear in can make a huge difference.
