About this deal

Join Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack as they go on all sorts of thrilling adventures, including River, Circus, Ship and many more. The first section of the story, which is set at a teacher's home, is there mostly to describe the characters and get them all together.

Although this is all a little too convenient to be real, somehow Blyton gets away with it and the presence of Kiki isn't as irritating as you might expect. The Boys Clubs of America gave this work a Junior Book Club Medal in 1947 under the title Mystery Island. That, of course, has always been part of its appeal – underdogs appeal to us, and making your heroes into Dickensian orphans goes a long way. When flashing lights are seen in a distant tower, Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack decide to investigate - and discover a very sinister plot concealed within its hidden rooms and gloomy underground passages. Craggy-Tops overlooks the mysterious Isle of Gloom — an island shrouded in mist and spray, and surrounded by a reef of rocks. The children are unable to tell him Joe’s last name, as apparently Aunt Polly doesn’t know it, or where he came from.

This does not continue on from The Island of Adventure, as it introduces the characters to us again and has them meet for the first time as well. The rest of the film she’s wearing a pair of knee high white boots – not very practical for scrambling around islands but probably very on-trend. And what might have been subverting a stereotype in 1940 is more like reintroducing a stereotype when read in 2018. Just off the coast is the mysterious Isle of Gloom – constantly shrouded in mists it is completely uninhabited, and has been for a long time.

During school holidays, Jack, his sister Lucy-Ann, and their parrot Kiki go to stay with their new friends, Phillip and Dinah, in their isolated old house, "Craggy-Tops", set on a steep cliff on the coast. She also loves her adopted "parents" Bill and Mrs Mannering very much, is Dinah's best friend, and quite fond of Philip. Then it all gets rather silly and overblown as they throw in a high-speed boat chase where Bill is after Smith.

I was jumping up and down in the hotel bed with excitment and squealing and could not read it fast enough! Then we’re back to following the book as Bill and Philip go down the well to Jack’s rescue and get caught. When the children meet Bill Smugs, who introduces himself as an ornithologist, they are delighted when he teaches them how to sail. Condition: This book is in good condition for its age other than some minor signs of wear, discolouration, sticker on endpaper. Rhys-Davies continues to play the Bond villain, explaining his entire operation and plans to Bill because it won’t matter, he’s going to die.

It is an adventure in the true sense of the word, building tension and excitement without resorting to the crude devices that rely on mayhem and destruction to achieve their ends. There have been a few adaptations of the Adventure Series over the years, and this is (to my knowledge) the very first. Anyway, it turns out that Bill has been after this gang for some time, and that the baddies have been using the island as the perfect secret place for their illicit operation.

Other splits and tears to wrapper down edges, with a couple of repairs - otherwise, showing signs of chipping. For most of this story, they’re staying with their aunt and creepy uncle; the house is literally falling down, they can’t afford glass windows so it rains in their bedrooms (I can’t imagine the mold…), and they’re so poor they can only afford one black servant. Like her brother, she has a tuft of hair standing up atop her head, but she shares neither his gift in attracting, nor his love for, animals, especially the small creeping types (mice, insects, snakes etc. Anyway, as for the actual plot: When Jack and Lucy-Ann come to stay with Philip and Dinah at Craggy-Tops by the sea, Jack has it firmly in mind that he simply must go to the Isle of Gloom, a small island obscured by a haze of mist.

Marooned far from the mainland on a deserted coast, Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack find themselves playing a dangerous game with an unknown enemy. She wrote over seven hundred books, which have been translated into many languages throughout the world.
