About this deal

I got to try that pair right after it came back from Canon from service, where they had determined that it was up to spec and working fine. I spent some time trying to make sense of it and I hope that what I learned will make your selection easier. Enjoy remarkably steady images thanks to Canon's Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, which counteracts a wide range of different types of shake and movement when viewing hand-held, or from moving vehicles or boats.

SpaceBass: Thanks for the link - it looks interesting and if it were made from carbon fibre could be a useful lightweight alternative to a 'pod especially for travel to remote places. My only criticisms are the weight and the eye relief(only 15mm), but these minor inconveniences are greatly outweighed by the spectacular optics. The number of tests depends on the individual product but we are confident in this product having tested all the major functions. No, the IS is not rock steady in a standing position (but certainly an improvement still), but when I sit down or recline in a chair and brace my elbows, it is steady enough to see details that otherwise would be lost in the shakes. The IS works perfectly and the optics are so good that the views of the night sky often assume a kind of three-dimensionality.

Being somewhat old-fashioned, I'd thought that a binocular with an exit pupil of less than 5mm would have limited usefulness for astronomy. In spite of the glowing reviews I'd read online, I was skeptical that a bino with such a small exit pupil would be a good performer on the night sky. If Canon could redesign them so there was a variable position, instead of just all up or all down, that wd help the non-eyeglass wearers (for folks that need the specs all the time. Offering superb quality, with 15 times magnification, high power and Canon precision optics featuring an Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) lens element to reduce chromatic aberration and the Super Spectra lens coating that delivers vivid, high contrast view with accurate colours.

There is a small, green LED by the button that lights when the IS function is active, so it should be easy to avoid leaving the IS function on by accident. My only complaint is that the eye cups are quite wide so for me they sre pressed hard against my nose when using them. I used to have a pair of the 14x40 Fujinon's and did not like the swaying effect caused by the prism movement. The IS also allowed easy split of HR2764 with the contrasting blue/orange colors clearly visible as well.
