About this deal

This is a fine book that not only details the story of The Black Ship’s contribution to stamping it out but also shows how the attitude of countries through the world hindered its final abolition. While this book describes the horrors of the slave trade, most of the book discusses many other topics, including the workings of the Royal Navy, the economics of the slave trade, epidemics and sea battles.

Copyright in 'artistic works' (including plans and architectural drawings) expires 70 years after the end of the calendar year of the author's death, the author normally being the person who drew the plans, unless he or she was working as an employee of a company, or under a contract which specified otherwise. Fair Rosamond captured two Spanish vessels, Regulo and Rapido, on 10 September and took them to Sierra Leone, where the Admiralty Court condemned them. The attempt to stop the slave trade was complicated by recalcitrant governments and wily ship captains. She went on to become one of the most successful anti-slavery vessels in the West Africa or "Preventative squadron". Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher, but my review is my own honest opinion.PLEASE take 30 SECONDS and sign up for the epic Nelson/Trafalgar project if you would like to see it made into a TV series. It prime mission, was to chase down the “slaver” ships as they began their voyage out of the slave ports of Africa, heading to various ports in the western hemisphere.

Ramsey received promotion to the rank of commander for the capture of Marinerito and handed over command to Lieutenant H V Huntley. After each of the chapters that outline the ship’s accomplishments, the author reproduces the register that lists the enslaved people that had been found aboard. In 1913 Cecil Sharp, Herbert MacIlwaine and George Butterworth published "Morris Dance Tunes" set 2, containing the tune Black joke. It is a historical work, describing the actions of one ship as part of the British Navy of the late 1820’s and how it fit into the West AfricaCommand, asked in Freetown. I read that book, too, and had the same thought that the ship would make an interesting modeling project. It was about a small group of people doing their best to end a disgusting practice, even when almost every structure was designed to impede them in their quest. Along with daily ship positions, the log contains details of the capture of various slave ships beginning with the HENRIQUETA.

A groundbreaking history of the Black Joke, the most famous member of the British Royal Navy's anti-slavery squadron, and the long fight to end the transatlantic slave trade. But as A E Rooks points out it is not new - institutionalised slavery helped to build empires throughout history. This is a rare book that can appeal equally to those who enjoy tales of the sea, of military history, or of the long struggle of the formerly enslaved and their descendants for civil rights and equality. The Black Joke was an excellent book that told a complex story of the period when the British had stopped allowing the transport of enslaved cargo.

It should not be surprising that those who valued profit above life and human dignity were also not above lying their entire faces off – and in every conceivable fashion and manner, with every means available – if it would prevent the WAS from capturing and condemning the illicit wealth imprisoned in their ship. I would have liked a bit more context about how the abolition process continued after the Black Joke left service, which was only touched upon but not in detail (was the traffic largely eliminated once France began making strong efforts? On 14 September, Black Joke was in company with Primrose when Primrose captured the Zephirina or Zephorina. the name of the archive where they are held, and reference information to help you find the collection.

Good ship-handling, the discipline of the Royal Navy gun crew, and light winds gave Lieutenant Downes the advantage. Patterns of repetition among the minor-key variations (14–15–14, 16–17–16) lend these groupings a certain autonomy as miniature ternary shapes. Those who participate in the creation, curation, and sharing of disparaging memes defend these actions as merely rhetorical, having no material impact on the populations that are being targeted. This book tells the story of the Black Joke, a former slaver who converted to the opposite side, trying to eliminate the slave trade. I’m fine with scholarly narratives as a rule but for some reason I had trouble getting through the chapters in a sitting.Ultimately, her intellectual passions are united by what the past can teach us about the present, how history shapes our future, and above all, really interesting stories. I had to listen slowly and rewind often, as there are so many names of people, ships, naval terms, locations, and more. Run by an immigrant, The Wasp fueled the racist grievances of the West Coast’s white working class, which resulted in the banning of Chinese immigrants for sixty-one years. At one point, 15-year-old Midshipman Hinde had to bring Black Joke back alongside Marinerito to rescue the boarding party, including Ramsey, which had become stranded on the Spanish slaver's deck. Enslaved Africans on arrival at Freetown became British, whether they wanted to or not, and were given a number of options.
