About this deal

Those cards were the ones we had the most questions about both nights we played and it really came down to not being 100% clear on what we could and couldn’t challenge. Again like its stablemate (pun intended), Here to Slay’s visual design and overall production quality is hard to criticise, with wonderful illustrations and nicely designed packaging throughout. From the creators of Unstable Unicorns, this brutal and adorable game takes 30-60 minutes to play and is for 2-6 players (recommended for ages 10+). Like its spiritual predecessor Unstable Unicorns, Here to Slay is a highly interactive game in which players will be doing everything in their power to get ahead by tearing other players down at the same time as advancing their own boards.

When activating an ability, you have an RPG-style difficulty score to meet or exceed by rolling two 6-sided dice. It costs 1 point to draw a card, play a card or activate an existing card ability, 2 points to attack a monster, and 3 points to discard your hand and draw 5 cards. The expansion recommends that you now collect 8 classes of hero, which makes it a more balanced game in our experience. This holiday expansion pairs with the Here to Slay, a strategic roleplaying game from the creators of Unstable Unicorns. Warrior foxes come with some powerful effects (Critical Fang gives you +4 when attacking a monster, for example). The game also includes items you can equip to your heroes, 1V1 challenge cards, and roll modifiers to tip the odds in your favor. Versus another similar card which gave a simple +3 (which is already very broken) with the same limit of 6, which was way too easy to get. The box contains 1 standard deck of 115 cards, 6 Party Leader cards, 15 oversized Monster cards, 2 six-sided dice, and 6 rules reference cards. Monsters have various pre-conditions that need to be met before you can fight them, such as requiring a certain type of hero(s) in your party. Though hugely popular – in thanks due to its superb visual design and excellent production values – I’ve never really been a fan of TeeTurtle’s Unstable Unicorns.

I often play Here to Slay as a two-player game with my husband – we used to remove hero cards from the deck to make it more suitable for a 2-player game. It balances the different actions really well (making attacking monsters a high-stakes, all or nothing move) and allows players to have big turns playing lots of cards or draw several cards at once when they start running low. Due to the low number limit (1-12) and high number changing cards (abilities and modifiers) the game tended to be too fast and snowballed way too much, so we ended up playing to four monster cards instead to make it a bit bigger.

Once a player meets that monsters criteria and has the available points to fight it, they roll the game’s two-game dice, through the games dice tower, to see if they meet the monsters second conditions. The aim of Here to Slay is to collect a set of 6 different hero classes which already in (one of each available in the base game) OR to defeat 3 of the monsters in a shared central row.

Placing hero cards down straight away can give you a free one-shot bonus (which therefore costs an action to play) and strengthen your party. Here to Slay is a great addition to any household, due to being a great two-player game, but also a fantastic game for a larger group. Each player has a party leader card which contributes one class towards their total and provides a benefit – often a +1 bonus to certain rolls. I should be honest and say that I have the deluxe Kickstarter edition, with gorgeous sleeves, a cardboard dice tower and a few promo cards.Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great game as it is, but there just weren’t enough challenge cards to prevent your opponent’s army growing before it was too late. Some warrior cards also have the ability to hold two item cards, so you can protect your loved ones with a decoy doll, as well as adding +2 to your roll. Playing a challenge card initiates a 1V1 challenge in which you and another player both have to roll the dice.

Speaking of those monsters, they’re a less cute collection of nicely designed creatures that come with powerful effects if you slay them, though there’s also a detriment in most cases if you roll under a specific target number. However, these games are over so quickly (5-10 minutes) that if they come around we just shuffle up and restart.Although it doesn’t seem like much, it really does improve the ratio of heroes to non-hero cards in the deck. But with the Warrior and Druid expansion cards, trying to collect 8 heroes was a much better challenge and enabled a fairer contest.
