About this deal

I knew that there would be fights, but I didn’t expect them to be shown with such detail and relish. However, in Chapter 17, "The Black Sheep", Henry Carpenter is stated to have died in 1922, meaning that he could not possibly have been unimpressed with John Carpenter's decision in 1939, as he had been dead for 17 years. Nope we get him waking up at the end and saying 'Fuck this shit' which is a reasonable reaction I suppose, just not what I wanted. Some chapters would focus on the past, such as the formation of Department 19, which gave some insight as to the dynamics of the Department.

Not content to have his young hero battling all kinds of evil, he makes sure that the reader truly believes in the world he has created. While I did like a lot of things about this story—especially Larissa—I tend to look for different things in most of the books I read. In a secret supernatural battle that's been raging for over a century, the stakes have just been raised – and they're not wooden anymore. But Department 19's slow recovery is decelerated when inmates of maximum security prisons are turned into vampires and begin rampaging over England ‒ and all over the world. Department 19 takes us through history, across Europe, and beyond - from the cobbled streets of Victorian London to prohibition-era New York, from the icy wastes of Arctic Russia to the treacherous mountains of Transylvania.Department 19 is the first book in a series, but unlike many books like this it does bring the main plot of the story to something of a natural conclusion. This cannot be the case, as the book takes place in October 2009, meaning that she should have been turned for 5 years and 3 months at this point, if the date given in Chapter 28 is correct. Department 19 is an extremely entertaining book that’s not even my normal type of read, but I do have to say that I got carried away with this fast paced, full on gore adventure. The author has taken a lot of the classic figures, like Van Helsing, Dracula, Mina Harker, and Frankenstein, and woven a new story around them.

Since membership was hereditary because one of the founders was his grandfather, Jamie became a member of the Department 19.

It is also a book about relationships and the angst of being a teenager working in an adult and very dangerous environment.

It made me realize that this isn't a game, or a film, where the good guys win in the end and the bad guys get what's coming to them. Department 19 was started over a hundred years ago by the group of hunters that slayed Dracula, and has been keeping vampires in check ever since. The timing couldn’t be worse for a coordinated, global attack on a number of maximum security prisons and hospitals—with the already-dangerous inmates now on the loose and turned into vampires. In a secret supernatural battle that's been raging for over a century, the stakes have just been raised and they're not wooden anymore. The story begins with a teenager named Jamie Carpenter who witnesses the murder of her father, two years after that event, his mother is kidnapped and vampire Alexandru attempted to kill Jamie but Jamie rescued Frankenstein who is a member of the Department 19. The Rising is a fast, furious, can’t-turn-away thrill ride that will suck readers in just like a video game. With Dracula slowly rising, the supernatural departments all over the world have got their hands full.

But Dracula alone isn't Jamie's only concern: during the attack on Lindisfarne his good friend Victor Frankenstein disappeared, and now he has to go to another rescue mission to get him back. The festive holidays are the perfect time to escape the cold, cosy up with a hot drink and lose yourself in a new book. Department Nineteen takes us through history, across Europe, and beyond - from the cobbled streets of Victorian London to prohibition-era New York, from the icy wastes of Arctic Russia to the treacherous mountains of Transylvania. A lot of YA urban fantasy has been published over the last couple of years, but almost none of it that would appeal to guys.It managed to resolve many loose ends, but also has a level of suspense that will leave reader's eager for the next installment. Jamie Carpenter now has to train new recruit, while Kate Randall together with Paul Turner forms ISAT (Internal Security Affairs Team) to make sure that such a disaster like Valeri's attack never happens again.
