It's simple and light, so it really doesn't add any faff to your bike setup but gives you a lot of gains instead. Your feet are still fully exposed, compared to a set of full-coverage mudguards, and there's nothing in the way of coverage for riders following you. Despite all of this, there is a limit, of course, as to how effective a mudguard of this nature will be in keeping you completely dry. It Just Works™ and in terms of what it's like to use there's not much more to say, except that it's also stable and rattle-free.
The mudguard section clips onto the wishbone mount, via three attachment points: one on either side of the 'guard and by choosing one of three holes in the middle. Admittedly, I don’t love the idea or look of (what is essentially) a sophisticated plastic fender and mount, and I was at-first dubious if the juice would be worth the aesthetic-compromising squeeze after receiving a Win Wing to review. Without any real tension holding them in place, I found that such plastic tails tended to slouch and bend especially on rougher terrain.
The secret to transforming a flat piece of plastic into a functioning mudguard lies in the pre-folding prior to use. By shielding only the upper rear quarter of the wheel, the Win Wing eliminates spray from reaching the critical areas of the rider with a minimum of material. The Win Wing takes about half a minute to take off from one bike and attach to another - and while swapping it around I’ve noticed it’s also not scratched my seat stays (I would still recommend attaching a piece of frame protection tape as a precaution). Further ‘thought of everything’ details include the slots on each side of the fastening that enable a zip tie to be closed over, to deter an opportunist theft. The glassfiber reinforced wishbone holder is both flexible and tough and the rubber straps are virtually indestructible.And, at the same time, its clever and minimal design leads you admire the thought process and engineering that went into it.
