Music at St Mary's

Director of Music

David Hewett began his musical career at Romsey Abbey in Hampshire, singing as a boy chorister in the Abbey Choir and studying organ with Jeffery Williams.

During his time as a mathematics undergraduate at the University of Warwick he was Organ Scholar at St Mary's Warwick and Sub-organist at All Saints' Leamington Spa, and continued his organ studies with Andrew Fletcher in Birmingham. During his DPhil (also in mathematics) at Oxford he sang as a countertenor in the Worcester College Chapel Choir.

He was appointed Director of Music at St Mary's Kidlington in 2011. He enjoys playing the organ for church services, giving organ recitals, and training and conducting the church choir.

David's main profession is as an academic mathematician, and he is currently a research fellow in the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford, and a junior research fellow at The Queen's College. His research centres on the mathematical analysis of wave propagation, especially electromagnetics and acoustics waves - so his research and musical interests are very much intertwined. David lives in Kidlington with his wife Meghann and two sons, Joshua and Isaac.
