About this deal

Given the super-long focal lengths (not to mention when using the teleconverters) and dim aperture range, you really need some stabilization to properly hand-hold a lens like this and get usable shots. Along the way, he's shot extensively with cameras and lenses of almost every imaginable type, brand and format. Once you start shooting real-world subjects, you’ll rapidly find that with its small aperture and demand for fast shutter speeds, this is an incredibly light-hungry lens. Autofocus is speedy, especially if you pair it with a phase-detect focus camera like the Olympus E-M1 Mark III.

With the 100-400mm at 300mm, however, the IS system (lens + the E-M1 III) didn't seem to keep things as steady and smooth. That said, one of my biggest complaints about the 300mm lens is how tricky it can be to get good, accurate manual focusing. Despite its relatively large size, I found the lens to be very easy to carry around, even for long periods. With an internal-focus design powered by a stepper motor, AF is fast, silent and accurate, especially if you’re shooting static or slow-moving subjects. Using the phase detection-equipped Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III, I found the lens was perfectly capable of tracking focus on large, relatively predictably-moving subjects such as trains or planes, but struggled with smaller, more erratic wildlife. Interestingly, they also enable rolling motion around the lens axis to be corrected by the camera’s IBIS.

On its own, the Olympus 100-400mm produces fantastic quality images, with very sharp detail and overall excellent resolving power, especially if you can get relatively close to your subjects and have good lighting. with the tripod mount and hood attached, and measuring over 20cm in length, this is one of the largest and heaviest Micro Four Thirds lenses. Not only does this model provide an extensive range (particularly when coupled with either of the available teleconverters), but does so in an extremely portable and lightweight form. This lens offers superior autofocus performance, even handheld, and in-lens image stabilization for the optimal shooting experience. The AF-MF switch is easy to access with your thumb, but I have to admit that I really do like the clutch system on the PRO lenses. In-lens image stabilization on/off delivers stable handheld super telephoto shooting, an AF/MF switch and a zoom locking switch. The Olympus 100-400mm Lens has a field of view equivalent to a 200-800mm lens in 35mm format, up to 1,120mm with the M.

is an appealing lens for Micro Four Thirds photographers interested in capturing photos of distant action. Also, the in-lens image stabilization featuring up to 3 shutter speed steps of compensation enables handheld super telephoto shooting. Over the years I've been very happy with the results I've gotten using the 300mm lens, and there will certainly be times when that will still be my lens of choice. While this is OM System’s third IS lens, it is alone among the firm’s other optics in not supporting Sync IS, in which the in-lens and in-body stabilisation systems work together for maximum effect.
