The Verve Resources and Information". The-verve.info. Archived from the original on 28 August 2008. Wale, Dan (26 August 2008). "The Verve – Forth". Drowned in Sound. Archived from the original on 4 August 2019 . Retrieved 4 August 2019. ARIA Charts – Accreditations – 1997 Singles" (PDF). Australian Recording Industry Association . Retrieved 29 May 2013. Forth is most disappointing precisely because it shows they've never lost their potential, that the band's chemistry is as good as ever when they're really cooking. Reviving the psychedelic, full-band sound of the early records instead of the Ashcroft-favoring mix of Urban Hymns, it's produced nicely enough -- but the great songs just aren't really there. And it's not because they couldn't write them; it's because they recorded them yet somehow left them all off the album. The Official Swiss Charts and Music Community: Awards (The Verve)". IFPI Switzerland. Hung Medien . Retrieved 29 May 2013.

For the first time, the Verve achieved commercial success with their new material. The first single, " Bitter Sweet Symphony", entered the UK charts at number 2 in June 1997. The BBC wrote that it "became one of the anthems of the year" and "became almost inescapable" after it was used in a television car advert. [25]And so it goes on. In Valium Skies, he wonders mournfully: "How do you stop yourself from giving in? Seems like the whole world is frying." Goodness, he's worried about global warming! No, wait, everything is OK, because as Ashcroft assures us, in his best approximation of a New York drawl, "She got all I need, the air I breathe." Then there's his penetrating analysis of celebrity. "Fame," he announces, "is living in a culture of flashlight, flashlight." You can just see Ashcroft's friends Chris Martin and Noel Gallagher nodding in agreement. In “Sit and Wonder” McCabe’s arabesque guitar work revolves around hypnotic rhythms and weaves in, out, behind and between Ashcroft’s voice, which is riveting as he repeats the one line chorus, “Yeah give me some light, give me the light.” He very well could be explaining the road to the band’s return, all the while making it sound like a defiant declaration: Keys To The World (2006) features a more contemplative sound than anything else Ashcroft has done to date. Folkier, with sheer soul overtones, the songs here are considered and affecting. ‘Music is Power’ samples Curtis Mayfield (one of Richard’s heroes) and there is an R&B old school template to ‘Break the Night’ with ‘Colour, Why Not Nothing’ and ‘Sweet Brother Malcolm’ that remind the listener that Ashcroft isn’t afraid to shine a light on his spiritual side.

The band released the album's first single " This Is Music" in May, and it reached No.35, their first single to reach the Top 40. It was followed by " On Your Own" in June which performed even better, reaching No.28. This single was particularly new for the Verve as it was a soulful ballad. The album reached the UK Top 20 upon its release in July, but Ashcroft broke up the band three months later, just before the release of the third single " History", which reached No.24 in September. Ashcroft later stated: "I knew that I had to do it earlier on, but I just wouldn't face it. Once you're not happy in anything, there's no point living in it, is there? But my addiction to playing and writing and being in this band was so great that I wouldn't do anything about it. It felt awful because it could have been the greatest time of our lives, with "History" doing well, but I still think I can look myself in the mirror in 30 years time and say, 'Yeah man, you did the right thing.' The others had been through the same thing. It was a mixture of sadness and regret, and relief that we would have some time away." Reviews

After so many years away, however, you’d have been forgiven for thinking the band may have developed in some way. Even just a little. But no; ‘Forth’ sees the band revisiting the tried and tested dynamics that saw them become one of the biggest bands of the last decade.

Beaumont-Thomas, Ben (23 May 2019). "Bittersweet no more: Rolling Stones pass Verve royalties to Richard Ashcroft". The Guardian . Retrieved 14 July 2022.Fear not! They soon reformed to make their ultimate statement, 1997’s Urban Hymns, an album generally recognised to be one of the brilliantly realised discs of the era. Out of adversity came strange fruit. Urban Hymns would sell over 10 million copies and won Best British Album at the 1998 Brits, was short-listed for the Mercury Prize and still ranks super high on all-time best-of polls. A majestic, mercurial and mature work this five-star disc is completely recommended. New Zealand album certifications – The Verve – Urban Hymns". Recorded Music NZ . Retrieved 26 June 2021.

Bitter Sweet Symphony" and "The Drugs Don't Work": "Discography The Verve". australian-charts.com. Hung Medien . Retrieved 29 May 2013. The band split up in 1999 amid rising tensions among the band members, of which one was now keyboardist Simon Tong. The controversy regarding the credits of their huge hit “ Bitter Sweet Symphony” also contributed towards these tensions. The band reunited in 2007, despite Ashcroft’s earlier dismissal of the idea of a reunion:He’s come a long way since those heady nights in Wigan but Richard Ashcroft hasn’t lost his way. His own music and that of The Verve are well-loved and will continue to be revered wherever people crave new songs for swinging lovers that also have a conscience. Dive in anywhere here. You are unlikely to regret your decision. Seriously: The Forth B-sides "All Night Long,""Ma Ma Soul,""Muhammad Ali,""Chic Dub,""Major Force,""Mover" and especially the grand and beautiful " Blue Pacific Ocean" are all varying degrees of excellent, with "All Night Long" and "Blue Pacific Ocean" in particular standing out as among the band's finest. (The latter wasn't even officially released; McCabe simply leaked it himself because it was too good to keep secret). It's simply beyond comprehension that gems like these were discarded in favor of lightweight pap like "I See Houses" and "Valium Skies" or aimless jams like "Appalachian Springs" or "Noise Epic."
