About this deal

I highly recommend this one, as I enjoyed learning about these beautiful creatures, and only wish that I had discovered it sooner! I want to express my sincere thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for this wonderful, heartfelt ARC. This delightful gem of a book will take its place high on my favourite list. This is my second reading of this enjoyable book which also has an alternate title, Away With the Penguins. The author writes with compassion and insight into the human heart, especially its good and kind parts in human nature that are redeemable. I loved the characters and its setting. There were sections that made me cry, parts where I was laughing out loud. I found it pleasurable and also thought-provoking.

Away with the Penguins: The heartwarming and uplifting

She was a bit unlikable at first and I was....frustrated by her actions but the ending turned things around beautifully for me. There were some themes that had the potential to be explored in much greater depth that were just skirted over. Granted, it’s highly unlikely that scientists would take an 86-year-old into their base nor let her roam around the penguin rookery with them, and you’d have to wonder if there would be anyone left in Veronica’s life after a lifetime of virulently acerbic treatment of others, but these narratively convenient elements are tempered by the fact that Veronica never once comes across as a saint. This gorgeous book has everything! Mysteries, misunderstandings, arguments, reconciliations, kindness, love and lots of PENGUINS!' I must say, How the Penguins Saved Veronica is an absolute delight. It’s charming. It’s heartwarming. It’s inspirational. Prior has written a beautiful story with a nice environmental message – a story that most readers will appreciate. The characters in the story are well-developed, and the plot flows seamlessly. The story highlights strong independent women as role models, while the antagonists are primarily portrayed as white males or individua After all, Veronica is almost eighty-six, and has to consider the dispersion of her considerable wealth after she departs this life. Not that there’s any sign of that happening: Veronica is hale and healthy, with an excellent memory, she continues to assure everyone (even if they know otherwise): “My memory is faultless. I can recall dozens of lines of Hamlet from my schooldays.” Politeness demands that Ipussyfoot around the truth.” Agree/disagree? To what extent do you think we do this as asociety? The next book to be featured on the Jo Whiley Radio 2 Book Club will be Away with the Penguins, the wonderfully uplifting novel by Hazel Prior. Hazel will be on the show on Monday 6 April and the book was released on 12 March. I found the characters fairly two dimensional and the plot was so unbelievable- not in a ‘this is fantasy suspend your disbelief’ way but in that it’s the kind of story where the reader should have been able to find it believable but it was all just too convenient and contrived for me.

Of course, one of the delights of the book is the penguins! Through Veronica’s eyes, we get to learn about penguin conservation, the research project, and what mischief baby penguins get up to. Really, they are utterly adorable. I loved the setting so much, and the scientists are sweet and smart, obsessed, and quite adorable too. We are always delighted to hear from authors. Although these days Veronica is rarely seen by anyone because, at 85, her days are spent mostly at home, alone. At the start of the story, Veronica imparts her father’s wisdom. What one piece of advice would you impart? If you need a break from violence, give this one a chance. It’s very engaging, funny and with an unforgettable character. And yes, there is some drama. It was a short boat ride to Isla Martillo and we were reminded of the rules: don’t get too close to the penguins; don’t feed the penguins; don’t touch the penguins; don’t steal the penguins; don’t take anything from the island. We weren’t permitted to go within three metres of the penguins but, if they came to us, we were to keep whatever distance we could so as not to stress them out. A final quip of “control your emotions” from the boat’s captain was most likely directed at us following our visible joy at seeing a large colony of penguins gathered on the beach as we approached the island. Within minutes, we were standing on the beach with them. A warm and witty journey of self-discovery. Prior proves that it’s never too late to become the person you were meant to be.
