The impressive 6-gallon reservoir is located all along the bottom of the planter box. Depending on how many plants you have and their stage of growth, this can last a few days or a few weeks. It includes a water level indicator and reservoir fill spout at one end. While it can be used indoors without worrying about damage, it is designed for outdoor use and larger growing needs. It is also heavy to move once it is assembled and filled with water and soil. We recommend putting it together as close to its final home in your yard as possible.Due to the connection to environmental influences, you can use other species as more than a water indicator for plants. Some plants can be used to detect early evidence of insects or disease. For instance, petunias and fava beans are used in greenhouses to detect the presence of thrips. The reflectivity in the S-band and the broadband ultrasonic spectroscopy as new tools for the study of water relations in Vitis vinifera L. Physiol. Plant 2013, 148, 512–521. [ Google Scholar] [ CrossRef] We measured moisture levels, light levels, and soil acidity with this multifunction analog meter from Trazon. While the most critical function in our tests was moisture meter accuracy, since we were testing specifically for dampness, we found the added functions—which give a broader picture of soil conditions—quite beneficial. Once the water has evaporated from the house plant, you will feel a considerable weight difference in the pot. This can give you a rough idea of when the house plant needs water. As the pot gets lighter, the closer it is to needing more water. If your house plant’s leaves start to change color, especially to a yellow or brown color, it can be a sign that it is not being watered correctly. In some cases, a thirsty house plant will start showing yellow or brown leaves.

If you have large plants in deep containers, or you want to measure soil moisture in the ground, then it's helpful to have a moisture meter with a probe longer than the typical 7 inches or so. And this extra-long probe from XLUX is 12.2 inches long, so you can get accurate soil moisture measurements right down at the roots of even your outdoor shrubs, large container gardens, or raised garden beds. Simply slide the probe down several inches below the surface of the soil, and within a few seconds, you'll know whether it's time to water or not. Using a soil moisture meter takes the guesswork out of watering plants and provides an accurate moisture level reading. These affordable and simple-to-use gardening tools can help potted plants or garden beds flourish. A soil moisture meter is worth the investment for the following reasons: Calabia, A.; Molina, I.; Jin, S. Soil Moisture Content from GNSS Reflectometry Using Dielectric Permittivity from Fresnel Reflection Coefficients. Remote Sens. 2020, 12, 122. [ Google Scholar] [ CrossRef][ Green Version] Tinsman concludes, “It's important to consider that different plant species have varying water requirements. Therefore, it's crucial to familiarize yourself with the specific needs of your houseplants to accurately assess their water requirements and ensure their optimal health.” Castro-Camus, E.; Palomar, V.M.; Covarrubias, A. Leaf water dynamics of Arabidopsis thaliana monitored in-vivo using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Sci. Rep. 2013, 3, 1–5. [ Google Scholar] [ CrossRef][ Green Version]A soil moisture meter can be a helpful tool for growing any plant, from a potted fiddle-leaf fig to a burgeoning vegetable patch. Many soil moisture meters are equipped for both indoor and outdoor use, but there are a few features to take into consideration. Probe length, which ranges from about 6 to 15 inches and sometimes longer, is one factor in determining which moisture meter is right for an indoor or outdoor garden. [ Google Scholar] For plants in soil the key size in determining the maturity and fullness of a plant is the diameter of the grow pot. The larger the diameter, the more mature the plant. How do we size hydroculture plants? If compost material is too dry, the material could take a long time to decompose, but if it’s soaking wet, it might attract pests. Knowing this, we were eager to put this Reotemp moisture meter through its paces, thanks to its long 15-inch probe particularly suited to testing a compost pile.
