Koalas are mostly active at night. They live in trees and are rarely found on the ground. They eat leaves of Eucalyptus trees. Koalas do not drink often, they get most of their water from the Eucalyptus leaves. Very much like the South American sloths in lifestyle, the koala bear has an extremely slow metabolism and takes days to digest a meal. Despite having no tail, the Koala has an excellent sense of balance. With a lean, muscular body, and comparatively long, strong limbs, the Koala can support its weight when climbing. The front and hind limbs are nearly equal in length and much of the Koala’s climbing strength comes from the thigh muscle, which joins the shin much lower than in many other mammals.
The resting heart rate of a Koala is anywhere between 70-140 beats per minute (it will depend on a range of factors, including the age of the Koala). It can be difficult to measure a resting heart rate for a Koala as they have a ‘sinus arrhythmia’ which means that their heart rate and breathing get out of sync. This can cause fluctuations in the heart rate which aren’t a reflection of the actual heart rate–resting or active. Koala rib cage Adult males communicate with loud bellows that intimidate rivals and attract mates. Males mark their presence with secretions from scent glands located on their chests. Being marsupials, koalas give birth to underdeveloped young that crawl into their mothers' pouches, where they stay for the first six to seven months of their lives. These young koalas, known as joeys, are fully weaned around a year old. Because of its distinctive appearance, the koala is recognised worldwide as a symbol of Australia. The animal was hunted heavily in the early 20th century for its fur, and large-scale cullings in Queensland resulted in a public outcry that initiated a movement to protect the species. Sanctuaries were established, and translocation efforts moved to new regions koalas whose habitat had become fragmented or reduced.Moving from one to another of the trees that it has designated as its territory is the most energy a koala will commit in any 24 hour period. The koala, or, inaccurately, koala bear (a common term outside of Australia, though koalas are marsupials, not bears), is an arboreal herbivorous marsupial native to Australia. It is the only extant representative of the family Phascolarctidae and its closest living relatives are the wombats.

The nutritional value of this diet is so poor that the koala is designed to conserve as much energy as possible. A healthy adult koala spends about 18 hours a day sleeping - mostly in the heat of the afternoon - and no more than 5 minutes a day in full-bodied exertion. These dexterous little claws make climbing easier, for sure, but also help in feeding, as the koala usually pulls branches to its mouth with a front paw to slowly eat the leaves off.Koalas are not social animals at all, and basically avoid or ignore the other members of the colony, except during breeding season. They do have overlapping territories, where some trees may be shared, and occasionally koalas may meet in a shared tree, but there is very limited, if any, interaction. Koala bears have special claws that make grasping and climbing easy. The front paws have five digits like a little hand. The two digits that might be considered the thumb and index finger are semi-opposed to the other three digits. The koala is found in coastal areas of the mainland's eastern and southern regions, inhabiting Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. It is easily recognisable by its stout, tailless body and large head with round, fluffy ears and large, spoon-shaped nose. The koala has a body length of 60–85 cm (24–33 in) and weighs 4–15 kg (9–33 lb). Colour ranges from silver grey to chocolate brown. Koalas from the northern populations are typically smaller and lighter in colour than those further south. The Koala is well suited to its life in the trees. Unlike other arboreal marsupials such as the tree kangaroo, the Koala does not have an external tail. However vestiges of a tail are still present in the skeletal structure of the Koala, indicating that at some time in its evolutionary history an external tail was present. It shares this feature with the wombat. They are not social at all, marking out clear territories, and actively avoiding each other throughout most of their lives, other than for very brief mating encounters. Instead of living safely in their home trees, sleeping or dining on leaves, they must take to the ground to find new trees that are not already claimed by another koala. Playing Swing Monkey is a good way to apply basic physics to gameplay. The game’s mechanics can help players learn and understand the process of energy conversion. The art of the nap does not get lost on the masterful koala. Koalas usually sleep quite high in branches and the mottled fur on their posterior makes for good camaflauge from below.

The Koala’s paws are specially adapted for gripping and climbing. Rough pads on the palms and soles help it to grip tree trunks and branches, and both front and hind paws have long sharp claws. Each paw has five digits; on the front paw, two digits are opposed to the other three–rather like a human’s thumb–so they are both able to be moved in opposition to the other three. This allows the Koala to grip more securely. Distinctive parallel Koala scratch marks on tree trunks are due to this particular characteristic. Koala fingerprints The territorial nature of koalas is why the preservation of their habitat is so vital. There is a very limited number of animals that can safely populate any given territory. This is ratio is known as the "carrying capacity" and when habitat is removed, and the carrying capacity exceeded, the overcrowded koalas do not adapt well. Koala bears may sleep in any number of exotic positions, usually hooking safely into the crook of a branch, but sometimes dangling precariously. The koalas in a colony are all aware of each other from the calls they make and the marks they leave on trees, but it is possible for individual to live in the same colony for 15 years and never interact or even meet.
