About this deal

His engagement with nature, though romantic rather than precise, pervades his works in many different techniques. In 1951 Trevelyan married Mary Fedden (see artists) and the couple travelled widely, in Europe, Africa, India and the USA, before settling in London, Durham Wharf, on the banks of the River Thames, where he set up his etching studio. Powers's monograph tries to do something different and will be accessible to a wider market, while also being beautifully produced. Julian Trevelyan ‘Trevelyan was brilliantly inventive and possessed a wit and innocence of eye that could discover enchantment in the most mundane scenes’.

He would encourage and help to further her career, and act as point of liaison in England whilst she worked abroad. The reprints in this are much better and of course this provides a much more rounded understanding of his work and life. Barewall Art Gallery based in Burslem, Stoke on Trent established in 2010, offers British 20th century modern and contemporary; art, ceramics and sculpture by artists from and connected to Staffordshire, Cheshire and the North. From 1931-33 Tschudi lived in Paris and studied with the Cubist artist André Lhote, then with the Futurist Gino Severini at the Academie Ronson, and finally under Fernand Léger at the Academie Moderne. Notoriously hard to find in decent condition, as the publisher's pictorial boards are so fragile, and virtually unknown in its glassine complete with flaps. He was born in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, the only son of Fred Wadsworth, a worsted-spinning industrialist who established both Broomfield Mill and the firm E.

There’s a gentle and quirky wit to his pictures: the policeman twirls his truncheon much as a child might twirl an imaginary wand; the string of helium balloons sold in the park, an outsized illustration which seems to capture the way a child might prioritize its visual scene, reaches higher than the tallest of palm trees. This gorgeous new book features beautiful woodcut images of countryside life, watercolours of rolling landscapes and many of Ravilious’ acute and profound war paintings.

Due to the scarcity of the book and the increased interest in Ravilious' work, the High Street book is generally sold in its entire published form. The book is enhanced with black and white illustrations by the artist Alice Pattullo that add to the story of these unique features of the English landscape. He was born in London to a Quaker mother from a family of optical instrument makers and Indian missionaries, and an engineer father who, as a keen amateur artist, encouraged his three children to draw and paint from an early age. Size 23 x 15cm (I did break the book decades ago, but I still have the covers and some of the spine.
