About this deal

Richer Sounds then told me that the Denon was too bright and I'd be better with a Cambridge Audio (now read elsewhere that RS push Cambridge Audio all the time), but that added the CA AXR-85 into the list.

Tone color is mostly neutral, not warm nor cold and this makes for a great match for all headphones as the DAC does not impose a character of its own. Its Bluetooth antenna that works as a wireless signal booster, I’ve seen already on quite a lot of devices and in here it works absolutely the same. In a bigger apartment, I was not losing BT signal and D30 would stay exactly in the middle, in the living room. With a Tidal Hi-Fi App installed on my phone, I was able to stream my music directly to it, playing all that via speakers. I walked through our bedroom and the signal remained always steady without losing a beat. In our home it offered a flawless Bluetooth experience and in an open space it should pretty much the same. Going outside to the balcony with few concrete walls between us, the signal started losing strength and music stuttered, skipping few beats here and there. I was expecting that, because all other device did absolutely the same, I wasn’t surprised at all. The A30 is a bit more limited with the available options for analog input since there is only a pair of single-ended RCA input. For digital inputs though, there are more options including USB, coaxial, optical, and even Bluetooth 5.0. All in all, D30 had a good extension in the lower and upper registers, but still there was some raw energy missing at both ends of the spectrum, making it rounder and smoother sounding most of the time.

I would say that if you do need the networking features, then the Yamaha A-S501 might be a good alternative to both the Yamaha R-N602 and the Denon PMA-600NE. As you have Mortaunt Shorts speakers the Marantz PM6007 could be the best partnership depending upon the size of them as Marantz is the most musical. Sadly its also the most expensive to as you would expect. Sound (headphone-out)Talking about the tonality, everything mentioned in the previous section still stands. It’s a lush-sounding device with a warmer bassline and lively treble. The notes about wide and modestly deep soundstage are also true with headphones. The only difference worth mentioning is that the integrated headphone amplifier can’t fully repeat the dynamic presentation of the DAC section. Now, don’t get me wrong here, the head-amp in D30 is no slouch and it is driving my Hifiman HE4XX without any troubles. It’s just that a high-powered external amplification such as Topping L30 will produce even more slam and bass authority with power-hungry headphones. This is to be fully expected off-course and it’s not something that should bother you in any way. The in-built headphone amp is very good and more than suitable for most headphones out there. At first glance, the D30 is a compact desktop DAC/Amp that is equipped with lots of options such as a headphone amplifier section, various input options including Bluetooth and MQA.

Planar pairs such as the Audeze LCD-X and the 55Ω dynamic headphone Focal Clear MG got loud fast and are well below half the volume capability of the amplifier making it dangerously easy to turn up the loudness higher than what is recommended. They don't have a psychoacoustics model to decide what to keep and what not to. They rely on inherent redundancy in the music data to compress it (in case of a single sine wave used here, that should have been most efficient). In contrast, the next choice, the AAC codec, is an excellent perceptually based lossy codec which makes encoding much more "expensive" in the form of CPU cycles but should generate better results:
