About this deal

Chibnall has established that the film was shown on LWT in 1976 and 1980 "in a bowdlerised version" (which edited out Britt Ekland's phone sex scene) [76] and once on Westward Television and on Granada in August 1981, but it was not shown nationally and in its entirety until a post-watershed BBC broadcast in 1986.

A staple of ‘tough guy’ fiction these days, I suppose Jack was one of the very first who you could say ‘didn’t start fights, but certainly finished them’. Andrew Spicer, University of the West of England: The Creative Producer – The Michael Klinger Papers; • Paper Given at the University of Stirling Conference, Archives and Auteurs – Filmmakers and their Archives, 2–4 September 2009. Although she had appeared in The Avengers and A Family at War on television, this was Scottish-born Dunham's film debut. The film's music also enjoyed its own resurgence in popularity, for it tapped into a 1990s interest in vintage film soundtracks. Few realized what was coming in the next ten years (the economic downs that commingled with the dark, creative ups in motion pictures) till it was all over. The Fletchers are obviously based on the real-life Kray brothers, Ronald and Reginald, powerful gangsters who ruled London’s East End through a combination of robbery, arson, protection rackets, and murder, before finally being arrested, tried, and convicted, with great media fanfare, in 1969. Can you think of a movie that’s really captured the type of person that uses very little dialogue and mostly action?

Even lesser movies (and Jaws 4 is one and The Island is another) are not as bad because he’s in them. On its general release in the North of England, Chibnall notes it had a "very strong first week", before an unseasonal heatwave damaged cinema attendance. And it’s porn of the sordid, seedy, homegrown variety, in which desperate, cash-strapped actors participate for peanuts, especially the women, and in which almost no age restriction is put on them – in fact, the younger the better.
