However modern folklorists have theorized that actually the carving probably Inspired the story and not the other way around. For ‘tis lodged against the door of my home on the sea-bed, and I can’t get in to my Mathy and children. Anyway, if you want to hear all about my holiday and my week-long first date, you can listen to the episode of Elevenses with Ariel at Patreon. And a maid is a woman who cleans and maybe cooks for a living, so, you know, the moomaid, I guess, is the woman who brings you freshly-made Cornish ice cream. Traces of the legend appear to have permeated many aspects of modern life in the area; there is even a local ice cream company named ‘Moomaid of Zennor’.

I love stories about mermaids anyway, but it was really the title which got me to pick up The Merrymaid of Zennor. At first, she listened only from the rocks at Pendour Cove, a small inlet of land along the rugged coastline barely a stone’s throw from the village. The proper or modern form of the name would be Matthew Trewella or Trewhella, which are found in some versions of the story.

Soon after, a mermaid appeared, and asked that the anchor be raised, as one of its flukes was resting on her door, and she was unable to reach her children. In most versions of the legend, she is named ‘Morveren’, however, in his novel ‘Seat of Storms’ Craig Weatherhill includes a mermaid of Zennor named ‘Azenor’. The fisherman initially dismissed the encounter as a bad omen, but, as written in Bottrell’s telling of the story ‘When Zennor folks learnt that a mermaid dwelt near Pen-dower, and what she had told the captain, they concluded it was this sea-lady who had visited their church, and enticed Trewella to her abode.

Although the church itself is of Norman origins, it is said to stand on the site of a Celtic church dating back to the 6 th Century AD. If it gets foggy, you might end up joining her… THE END The carving of the mermaid (Caitrina Nicholson CC BY-SA 2.At various times in history they have been used to represent vanity (hence appearing with combs and mirror), the dual nature of Christ (with his human/divine nature symbolized in the mermaid's ability to live in the realm of air and the realm of water), and of course given their famous beauty and scanty wardrobes, as warnings about the temptations of lust. Although it was as quiet as a whisper Mathew stopped and turned - Morveren's eyes were shining, and the net had slipped from her head and her hair was wet and gleaming - It was love at first sight. The tale of the Mermaid of Zennor (An Vorvoren a Senar in Cornish) first appears in writing in the work of William Bottrell (1816-1881).
